:)Hi Everyone Happy New Year, sorry I hav'nt been posting for a while. Thanks for your replys to my first thread, need more help with my mates Freelander he now has a problem with the IRD he doesn't know what it is for (any ideas???? ) the local Land Rover Dealers (David Morrisons - Stirling ) Scotland have quoted £1200.00 to replace the IRD is it as expensive to replace as they are saying???? Has anyone any ideas where to go elsewhere to get this IRD replaced cheaper in Scotland. & what does the IRD do???.

Have a look on ebay for one ,or ashwoods,if its out of warrenty take it to a l/r independant they know were to get them from at the right price

Ashwoods have them for about £400 but then you have to fit it......

The IRD carries the front Differential, a reduction gear set, then turns the drive through 90 degrees to the propshafts and the rear diff.

If it has failed, check the Viscous Coupling for seizure, The big lump in the middle of the propshafts. This is usually the reason the IRD fails. Every one we've changed has been because of that.

Takes about 4-5 hours to change one, so labour is about 5 X £80 at a Dealers.

I'll pass your advise onto my mate hopefully he will get it sorted. I'll post a note in the future when he gets the IRD fixed to let you know how it went.
