Hi guys,

I just put in my new mobo, CPU and memory. In Windows it sees the processor as being a 1.20Ghz Athlon XP... Whch it is not... It's a Sempron 2800+ which shoudl be registering as 1.90Ghz at least. Is it a windows problem or a mobo/CPU problem? I dont want to have paid out well earned dosh for a CPU that is faulty and not running as fast as it should do.

I have winXP and the mobo is an ASRock K7VT4A Pro

Cheers, J

Hi,

I have experience of this problem before.

There are two clock settings, the FSB* speed and the clock multiplier. The motherboard thinks the FSB is 200Mhz, with a clock multiplier of 6x. It should be a FSB of 333Mhz, with a clock multiplier of 6x.

The website:

http://www.asrock.com/product/K7VT4A%20PRO.htm

Lists your processor as being compatible in all revisions of the BIOS.

Page 13 of the manual shows how to change the FSB speed. All motherboards come with the jumpers set to the slowest speed. Ask if you want to know about any of the other options.

* The actual clock frequency is half of those I've written, as both the rising and falling edges of the clock are used. Thus 333Mhz may appear as 166Mhz in the BIOS etc.

In many cases now, you also need to install a set of drivers which come with the processor/motherboard so that higher speeds can be detected by Windows.
