If you have driven it, then yes you will have done damage, sorry to say.

My understanding is that if you put petrol in a diesel car the only thing you can do is not start it, tell the pump attendants, and call for some support service, like the AA or your local garage to come and drain the system for you.

Due to the quanity you may not have done serious damage though, but you may require some seals and gaskets to be replaced in the fuel lines. Someone with more knowledge on this should be able to help guide you in the right direction as to what to do next, or even put your mind at rest.

Chances are you'll be alright, but you were probably wrong in filling up with the diesel, what you should of done is drained the tank! all that will probably happen is damage the injectors! Fairly easy to replace (but not cheap).

Also think about changing the fuel filter!

At only 3 litres [then diluted by approx 38 litres of diesel] i would be surprised if you get a future problem.
But as cocky said - wrong remedy, should have been drained.

The injector pump suffers the most.

You will soon tell, if you have trouble with starting when warm or seeming to lack power.

As Dave says, it should be diluted enough.

Neat petrol would have lasted about 3 or 4 minutes.

Peugeot 307, VW Bora, Audi etc. do not like petrol at all. We've done loads.

i'd forgotten about the pump, forgot that the diesel lubricates it!!

Did you fill it , if not fill it, then keep on topping it up, even if its only a few litres at a time, so the concentration of petrol decreases as quick as poss.

but draining would have been best.

We had a passat at work which was filled 1/3 petrol topped with diesel...carried on working just fine

Wouldn't worry too much, although it was the wrong thing to do to top up......mind you when some garages do grade changes you'd be surprised how much mixing goes on when the tanks aren't bottomed - and how much normal unleaded used to get sold as super!!!

Dont worry It will be ok... Keep putting deisel into the tank after every run. drive slowly. If you had put £40 of petrol and only 3 lts of deisel it would be a different matter.. Yes its only the pump that may be lubricated, but I dont know if the TD4 has a pump like the old school deisels. or if its (electronic) injection, then it wont have a pump! (only a feed pump like a petrol engine,) anyone know for sure?

I don't think you'll have problems with that percentage of mixture.

TD4 is a common rail diesel so the injection is electronic controlled, however my opion like some others is that the ratio of petrol to diesel in this case makes it pretty insignificant and no long term damage will result.

You should be OK. Franchised dealers are ripping people off with the fear factor. Best to have drained it but I know many cars that have been none the worse for the experience. Problem is the elctronics that can get confused. In the old days as a driver of coaches we used to put petrol in the tanks at around 10% to prevent waxing. Modern engines are prbably less tolerant because they are more finely calibrated and engineered but drive sensibly keep topping up to reduce the mix and put in a good additive like Millers. Good luck. Probably best to change the fuel filter once its pure diesel again.
