Go for it Timbott!
They are great little motors and real fun. I had one earlier this year and did a lot of laning with it, not much they can't cope with. having the narrow wheel base they can sit on top of the ruts rather than get stuck in them. Check out http://suzukiclub.com/index.html Loads of pictures and a nice friendly little forum if you want any advice.

And yes I hate to say it, they have been seen to pull Landies out of the mud.

Actually I had thought of a Suzuki but it would have been Landy less.
As far as I know you can't join in with the BADLC fun and games without a Landy and I couldn't find any other clubs locally. So I think it's going to have to be a TDi Disco or Rangie. I had thought of LPG but it's shot up to 45p per litre and I recon it will start rising quickly now. Thanks Mr. Blair.:thebird:

Give it a good look over, the one draw back with them is rust. The rust will not be a problem for the vehicle and it will run forever, but the MOT men get upset about it and it is normally in places that are hard to fix, i.e. expensive.

Only learned that from wheeler dealers, as they got one, which look reasonable but as they started to do it up, they found the problem. Ended up cutting their losses and turned it into a monster off road machine, the guy who bought it was happy, and was going to sort out the welding himself in the future.

Seriously though, they do rot, up in the front wheel arches, by the floor to bulkhead joint and the sills, behind the plastic over covers.

You certainly have to keep an eye out for the rust, as mentioned around the hinges, doors, bonnet and rear door, wheel arches and also rear floor.
Is it a tin top or soft top you're looking at, and what engine, also Samurai or Santana?
The advantage with them is they are a vey good DIY vehicle and can easily be covered in checkerplate to hide the rust.....like mine was!! You can even add Landie parts (note the Defender arches). The Santana even has a Land Rover VIN plate!

I don't know too many details yet 'cos I ain't seen it but I think it is a 1300. I know the chap I'm buying it off though and I know he looks after his stuff and spends too much money on them looking after them:eek:

I won't actually see it 'til next weekend 'cos it is in Stoke but I have seen a piccy, not that tells you much!

It's a soft top by the way.

first thing u wanna do is fit the 1600 vitara engine

that'll be after you've got over the fact its a suzuki :(

jen.s.f
6th Feb 2006, 14:33
The Vitara engine is a good idea, provided the rest of the wagon is up to it! My first sugestion would be to get a spring lift, either by fitting shackles, or you can put Suzuki Carry (Sooty) van springs on them, just gives that extra bit of ground clearance.
Mine had a full Ironman suspension lift kit fitted and, while it was great for off road, you felt every bump on road. The shockers do tend to suffer on them a bit, so if they look a bit old it might be worth going for some Pro-comp or similar. Alot of people go for spoa conversions, but unless you intend to do some serious mud plugging they don't need it.
A good set of tyres, as always, is a must. Mine ran on A/T's and were just as good off road as on. Being a lighter vehicle than a Landie they don't dig in so much so don't need the chunkier tyres. Off set wheels are another cheap and cheerful mod that is well worth the money. A snorkel can be made for around a tenner with pipe from B&Q (can let you have pictures of mine if interested) and we also changed the air filter to one of those enclosed boy racer type ones to give it a bit of extra grunt.
The 1300 engine is the best to go for and actually comes in two sizes, 1298 and 1324, it also has a five speed box (although most Santanas have 5 speed box despite the engine size). They are a great little drive, nice and nippy around town and easy to park. The Samurai has a wider wheelbase than the Santana so is much prefered for off-road and more stable on road. You do hear these horror stories of how easy they are to roll, but I never had any problem with mine and used to throw it at the corners sometimes! Many people also change the carb or put in a better fuel pump an they can have problems cutting out on steep climbs.
Another good thing about them is the heaters work!!!

Just a tip, Tim.

The cam feed is a tiny hole , a restrictor ( a bit like the 2.3 and 2.6 Rovers, and we all know what happened to them), use 10/40 oil. The cam runs in the head, there are no bushes/bearings, so if it seizes, snaps the belt, valves, etc and it takes the head with it.

Don't use an engine flush or it will probably block the restrictor, change the oil regularly for the first few thousand miles.

I did quite a few when they were the in thing.
