Saw this film at the weekend and was mighty impressed. A biopic of Johnny Cash's early years. In the usual style of these things they modify some events to improve the narrative, or combine several events that happen at different times into one scene, but then it isn't supposed to be a documentary. The sound and the look and the general period feel were spot on. Big thumbs up from me.

Apparently both the leading actors did all their own singing - very impressive.

I'm desperate to see this film, as I reckon it'll be very true to life
I'm proud to say I saw Cash back in (I think?) 1977 at Sheffield on his 'Silver' tour.
Sadly I never got to see him again
He's a real musical giant.
If anyone saw the documentary on BBC the other night, it was marvellous with all the archive footage, San Quentin concert included.
And later in life when he played the New York punk venues & was feted by the kids in there
It was also very nice to see footage of 'The Highwaymen' as well;
Cash
Waylon Jennings (possibly best known here as the narrator from 'Dukes Of Hazzard' (& singing the theme tune)
Kris Kristofferson ('Rubber Duck' in Convoy)
Willie Nelson (wrote/sang 'Crazy', 'Blue Eyes Crying In The Rain' & played Uncle Jessie in the 2005 film of 'Dukes Of Hazzard')
A real legend

Forgot about this thread until it popped up as a 'notification' in my e-mail.
Bought the film last autumn, but paid about £8.00.
It's superb!!
Phoenix & Witherspoon are incredible in the roles, I never expected them to be so 'spot on'.
When I first watched it, & heard 'Folsom Prison' being demo'd to Sam Philips, a shiver went down my spine, as Phoenix picks up the pace & speeds it up.

It's got to be quite possibly the best music biopic since' The Buddy Holly Story' (which got Gary Busey an Oscar nomination)
