This kind of thing makes me mad ...
:roro: Just got an email from Virgin, saying their 24/7 service (unlimited freephone dial-up) is going up from £12.49 to £13.99 a month. :(
However, they are offering 512k Broadband for £12.49 a month.
OK it's obvious what their game is, but I can't get frigging Broadband, I applied to them first and they said they couldn't provide, so now I am being penalised ... :( :( :(
I feel a letter coming on ... :roro:

I didn't get a reply, I emailed 'credit@ ... ' as that was the only real email address I could find  I am a big fan of the Virgin group of companies, I like where they came from and what they stand for, but stuff like this makes you htink they are just like all the rest really ... maybe I'll try writing to the big RB himself :D

Bernie,
Dial up is moving from mainstream to a “legacy” service, as broadband takes over. With broadband the modem terminates at the local exchange, whereas with dial up it terminates at one of their offices. With economies of scale, and this technical difference, broadband is (probably) now cheaper to provide.
Being charged more for slower access wouldn't appeal to me either. May I ask whether the distance from the exchange is the problem, or whether the exchange needs “upgraded”. Sometimes local campaigns have persuaded BT to upgrade exchanges. If distance is the problem could you possibly use a radio link to someone who does have broadband?

Thanks Jonathan, the exchange has just been upgraded to as good as it will get for some time, but my problem is distance. 11km from the exchange and Bt recommend a max of 9. They tried to set me up as 11km is possible depending on line quality, but it didn't work, and until they dig up all the old cables, it won't :(
Radio link-up sounds interesting - i will have to persuade someone down the glen to get BB - though there aren't many folk between me and the exchange :D
