Not come across one of these, what is it all about then? Always looking for cheaper calls, esp to other countries...:)

Have a look here (http://www.wanadoo.co.uk/time/talkoffer/?cd_source=arthuradel&linkfrom=Today&link=3&article=TODinternet_access) ... cheap calls to 20 countries + all call free to any UK landline free (evenings & weekends) 6 months free then £4 a month extra, as they are my ISP anyway.

Just got one too. Only critcism is the 'wireless adaptor' (very long usb wire attatched to a small dangling box) which must be used with my wireless laptop!
There seems to be a problem in as much as I can't use the wireless laptop wirelessly without their adaptor.....sort of defeats the reason for getting the wireless laptop.
As yet I have not found them very helpful as they only refer (read from) to their online help pages.....I don't think its too much to ask to speak to someone who's genned up on technical issues...they have yet to provide such a person
Must admit I hold a few sour grapes with broadband suppliers and feel they'll tell you owt to sell the product. Couple of months back, BT sales insisted their broadband package was fine for windows 98 1st edition. Fine, I took their package...it mad a severe mess of the computer and their techies said it was not suitable for 1st edition......and I would need to do a full hardisc restore (7yrs of updates on dial up would be lost). BT didn't give a ****e about the damage done incidentally....:(
Wanadoo...good/bad?.....still in the balance for me until the wireless issue is resolved.

And as for the cheap phone calls....its one of these that links to the wireless networks.. can't remember the names but think I'm right in saying they can be picked up for the price of a cheap mobile and a years subscription is about £20 all in.....I may be wrong, but I think the phone bit is a £inflated con......something like that anyway......................

I know what you mean about the dongle ... ooerr misus!!, I just used mine to connect another desktop PC upstairs so it`s not important to me that it has a long lead. As for the voip phone I`m sure I`ll get the use from it & get my money`s worth as I can phone landlines compared to Skype which is PC to PC as far as I know & the other person needs Skype also to connect

According to Wanadoo`s blurb you can connect `third party` wireless laptops to the Livebox ... see here (http://help.wanadoo.co.uk/resultDisplay.do?gotoLink=177&docType=1006&contextId=657%3A177.237&docPropValue=kb6511&clusterName=DefaultCluster&contentId=4ebc4bcd-5ce1-4df7-8961-9f567b8fb1b4&responseId=8d2e8ca9895d3ec8%3A100ebec%3A10962a9bcc 5%3A3553&groupId=1&answerGroup=1&score=880&page=http%3A%2F%2FESERVER_f18d0cd7-16c2-4878-8c76-f65dc44cff12.xhtml&result=0&excerpt=How+to+connect+a+third+party+wireless+devi ce+to+your+Livebox&resultType=5002#Goto177)

Cheers Madoobri..........Have tried it that many times that I'd lay good odds that I could recite the 26 character wep key from memory!
I'll probably try wasting another day bouncing between the laptop manufacture and wanadoo helplines.....(once I've got last weeks fiascos out of my system!)
Meanwhile, I'll let me dongle dangle freely  .....sure beats dial up.:)

I have a wanadoo live box. Not the phone call package though, just tinternet.

First livebox died after the first week. The adapter for the plug/mains socket went west.. They wouldnt send a new adapter, but requested return of box etc as a package. The new one came with a bag post paid to return the old one.

We have the issue about wireless too...need the danglydonglething even on wireless enabled lap tops. The internal wireless will just not find the live box under any circumstances, and to get the laptop to recognise the dingledangledongle thing you have to disable the internal adapter. No problems running three computers at the same time though.

I can stand on a chair and see the exchange from here...the connection is running at 36mbps at the moment, but usually I am getting 54mbps. Sure as heck knocks the stuffing out of dial up.

Probably stating the obvious here but are you running the `wireless` software from the CD on your laptop before you do all this?

Skype is also PC to landline/mobile. It is called Skype out. You have to buy credits before you can use it, minimum 10 Euros. The call rates are very low, less than 2p/min to most of the world. Have a look at their webpage for the other things you can do with Skype.

I am waiting for the next Skype phone to come along. It will have the Skype software loaded into the phone and will use the wireless connection straight to your router. No need to have the PC on, or have the handset plugged into your PC USB port. Once these handsets are available ( and at a reasonable price) it will be the beginning of the end for phone call pricing as we know it.

Get your EBay shares now :D

They didn't send one...nor any info on how to use unless its in their software help file. While they were (in my opinion) mis-selling it me a couple of weeks back I was told the phone bit would be a seperate line with seperate number. What the seperate number is must be their secret ....or maybe just wanasell bull****/..........like when I was told I could use my inbuilt wireless with their product.
Had a phonecall from wanadoo tonight re: the need to dangle the dongle....was put through to a couple of 'experts'??? (I don't think they were that good myself on computer protocols)....I suggested they were possibly using unusual, cheap soft/hardware that doesn't follow usual wi-fi protocol and works in an unusual way.....the suggestion wasn't exactly denied.
I'd be interested to hear if anyone on the planet has connected their inbuilt laptop wireless to a wanadoo livebox.
Yep, broadband is the way to go,...but I just 'wanago from wanadoo' at the moment :D

Hi Chris,
They don`t send a phone as such but they are meant to activate it so you can make calls & it`s supposed to be an 0845 number, when I checked my account earlier it said allow 7 days for activation & that they will send an email when it is activated ... we`ll see!

My son managed to connect his PSP wireless without dongle  to the Livebox no problem BTW ... is that not the same kinda thing?

chrisandlandie
13th Feb 2006, 23:36
Maybe I should have got a psp instead!:)
The inbuilt will connect to the livebox, but can't get an ip address from it.
Come to mention it, their adaptor behaves in exactly the same way if I boot it up with the adaptor plugged in....so maybe its a fault in their software:rolleyes:
Their adaptor only works when its plugged into the usb with the computor already on
I told them this tonight but they didn't focus on it.....
Must be a software fault...after all on a desktop you'll not be wanting to plug the usb adaptor in each time surely?
Hmmn......this is like landie diagnostics

Hi Madoobri,
Big thanks for that ;) , I went here last night and downloaded the simple instructions
http://http://www.bbhelp.net/livebox-help-v2.asp?plist0=cat_stages&plist1=cat_PC_Livebox&plist2=subcat_PC_Livebox_3rd

Just booted up the computer this morning and followed the instructions I download. Literally took a couple of minutes and bingo! :)
To think I've spent every spare hour for 7 days trying to sort this....the wanadoo managers really must be ignorant, **** head, money grabbing ******s (personal opinion of course!).

I dunno,..... the energy and knowledge of two specialist world wide organisations 'technical might' (my ****!) .... and the final answer is a visit to landrovernet and a point in the right direction from a landie man.
Landrover buffs unite!...taking over the world would probably be quite easy...if we didn't have better things to do of course! :D
Wanadoo?..yeah great, but don't expect any knowledgeable tech support, come here for that!

Madoobri
14th Feb 2006, 14:59
:D Well done, worrying though that Wanadoo Tech Help couldn`t tell you that!! So your now dongleless are you? keep the spare dongle for another Desktop PC or Playstation or something ... that`s all it`s good for anyway. What about your phone is that giving you free calls yet? still waiting on mine being connected then that`s everything working ok ... so far!! ;)

chrisandlandie
14th Feb 2006, 18:25
Aye,the dongle has been ditched back in the box....I won't be seeing that thing again for a long time.:D
Iv'e not had any reference or communication from them about the phone line. Did scan the terms and conditions though and the phone bit may take upto 30 days.
You're lucky with your connection speed......best mine will do is 54Mbps......going down to 30 odd on batteries.....thats with a 2mb line. Quick enough for the moment though. Next thing to sort is the antivirus to come on before it hooks up to the net on startup....seems to be a second late....theres always summat, but a least the dongles now dangling in the accessory graveyard (the attic)!;)

;) Have read with interest all about the Livebox. I do not have a conventional landline and my broadband is satellite linked. I worked in the telecom industry a few years back and so far I haven't found any of the providers giving anything away. What you supposedly save on one thing they will charge you on another.

0845 numbers are highway robbery. Go to saynoto0870 for alternative geographic numbers that won't cost as much.

Jan;)

Chris,
Have checked my user account & they say I`ll be on the voip phone thingy within 24 hours ... aye right! :p So will let you know if it happens, worth checking your online details out. Yep I`m getting 100Mbps here & the upstairs desktop is 54Mbps same as yours, that`s on a 2.2MBps line which they say they will upgrade soon to 8MBps ... again aye right! ....... cheers! :)

Aye, still upto 24hrs to go.
I think its all in the name Madoobri.............'wanadoo'........not the same as 'do' is it?........they seem to have all the pretensions of aspirations but not the abilities or desire.....dreamers maybe...and we are paying for their daydreams!
You have to laugh!...its the world we live in these days :D
(did I hear someone saying I was cynical?....its based on relavant experience!) :D
Cheers!

Just booted up the computer this morning and followed the instructions I download. Literally took a couple of minutes and bingo! :)
One of my mates brought his new laptop down & I had it up & running in minutes using this link (http://zxon.notnet.co.uk/wanadoo/3rdparty.html) ... still no voip phone, they tell me it should be connected within a week

chrisandlandie
23rd Feb 2006, 21:05
Well, I have my 0845 number as of yesterday.....just need to unplug the box for 15 mins and enter a pin.....no rush to start messing again....
I have noticed that the speed varies from 54Mbps to 24 Mbps...occasionally hitting 1Mbps! on wireless...even with a good signal.
They also say you will lose your internet connection occasionally as they update the phone thing periodically.....and suggest you go and make a cup of tea when this happens :flushed: .......isn't that why dial up customers upgrade in the 1st place??
The link your mate went to is a new one......perhaps they have been reading this thread :D
The thing to do is not go through the properties on network connections....there is no need, nor is there a need to set it up as a shared connection etc....
Happy days........
