View Full Version : I think I need a new gearbox input shaft bearing

So, at tick-over with the clutch out I get this happy "trundling" noise from the xsmn tunnel, which goes away when I dip the clutch.
Also, once moving I get a slight "clack" noise when I change gear or ease off the power, plus the occasional sensation of something grabbing slightly in the drive train.
Gearbox input shaft bearing? If so, what can I expect to pay? :(

You're a man after my own heart Bob. I can't help you with your problem, but I can identify with your description of the noises. I know exactly what a happy 'trundling' noise sounds like.

How many km's on the gearbox Bob?

Trundling, whirring noise at idle and disappears when clutch depressed sounds like a knackered clutch release bearing. How many miles since last clutch and is it a town motor i.e.stop start driving???

That's why I've asked Bob about the distance the gearbox has done. I also think that the problem is more likely to be the release bearing rather than the input shaft bearing. At least it's cheaper than replacing the shaft bearing. :)
I wouldn't worry about it too much if it is the release bearing, and I'd wait until either the engine or gearbox has to come out before I'd replace it.
If however, it is actually the input shaft bearing, it needsimmediate attention.

It's showing around the 60,000 mile mark and curiously enough had a new xnsfer box and clutch less than 2500 miles ago.
It's going in to the same workshop tomorrow to have a 60k engine overhaul so I'll be raising it with them then.
It's an average motor, with some round-towning counterbalanced by some long motorway driving, eg I went to Lincoln and back last week.

If it is the release bearing, it will make a noise, if it is drying out and about to collapse, when you press the pedal. I would worry about it.
If it is, as you say, quiet when the pedal is depressed, vehicle stationary, then the drive train isn't in motion. It won't be the flywheel bearing, as that is still turning. It won't be the Thruust bearing, as that is under load and not squealing.
So that leaves the gearbox bearings.

Spigot Bush, 10 quid for parts and then labour to take g'box out!!

Yeah, that's what I thought about a week ago, just wanted to hear it from someone else :(

Have you checked your oil level or noticed any oil leaks ?

Not noticed any leaks, and "as far as I know" the oil was refilled as part of the clutch/xnsfer box job.

Well, 60,000 mile engine service done.... Couple o' gearbox retaining bolts had slackened off a little since the clutch overhaul.
Still getting the "marble in a matchbox" clacking noise on take-up though. Decided it's not enough of a symptom to worry about just yet.
Service was well worth it. £400 and it goes like a train now. Didn't realise just how old and clattery it was.
