I have an 00 Disco td5 auto that is misfiring, loss of power (no smoke) and cuts out while driving. To restart it I have to do full accelerator crank. I had the injector harness replaced due to misfiring a year ago. The filter, pump were both canged out - no effect. There was oil on the ECU engine harness plug which was cleaned (no oil inside the ECU itself). The injectors each fire using the test box. Seems to me there is some kind of fuel supply problem as the engine cuts out hand has to purge. No ECU fault codes to help out. Any ideas on what it could be.

My TD5 02 Disco did that are you loosing water by any chance?

I had the head gasket replaced as i was using water and on the coolant test it showed gasses in the water.
They also replaced the mass air flow meter.

I have seen similar symptoms in s TD5 and it ended up merely being the turbo dump valve was jammed shut, so to prevent damage to the engine the ECU limited everything and the drive was hideously lumpy!

00 S2 Disco TD5Are you using a main dealer or an independant ? Have they tried doing live data displays whilst the car is in motion - this is the only way you are going to sort this out.Td5 storm fault codes can be misleading at times, and there is no monitoring of fuel pressure in the rail - only fuel temp.I would get a fuel pressure gauge hooked up that can be read from inside. It should remain steady at about 60psi.If that is ok then an oscilliscope hooked up to the crankshaft position sensor would be next.
Trouble is you might have problems getting someone willing or able to go to these lengths - dealers tend to want to throw bits at it - then bill you.

Regarding the loss of power, I had the same problem a while ago with also a 2000 TD5. Jon V8 helped me a lot in finding out the problem.
I had two things that causes the problem :

1) wire loom that comes just above the airco compressor ( compressor right from engin top) was damaged due to the high temp of the compressor. This wire loom combines the sensor wires coming from the turbo waste gate solenoid and the mass airflow meter. Check that first.
2) after hint from Jon V8, the turbo wast gate solenoid also was broken.
My official LR dealer replaced that for only 80 €.

Problems we had was : loss of power at around 3000 rpm. After that the engine was just running as it was pulling 50 tons. After cutting off the contact the ECU reset and the car was again driving normally untill it reaches 3000 rpm again.
Also the car was hesitating( bumps..) while accell.

I am happy to give you the same advice, other members gave me here at this forum.

Hi,

Thanks for the tips. I am using an independent LR service who also owns a TD5 so is very interested in solving the problem for me at lowest cost. He has checked the harness over the aircon and it is ok. We made up a smal test box out of an injector harness plug/connector with an on off switch for each injector. By switching each off one at a time and checking revs he could see if an injector made any difference. No 5 injector off made no difference so we now suspect a mechanical failure on No 5 even though it did click. I will keep the forum updated of developments. We have a replacement injector to try and if this fixes it great, otherwise back to the drawing board.

Hi All,

The injector swich breakout loom we put together identified a mechanical problem with the No. 5 injector (though it still clickied & ECU could not fault). We put in a new injector $$$$ and it now fires on all cylinders. Looks like we have solved this - thanks for the advice. I might see an injector specialist and see if the old one can be checked out.
