View Full Version : Oil leak between engine and gearbox

Have a small oil leak through the lower bolts that holds the gearbox and engine together. Oil is most probably engine oil.
But I thought in this section ( where the clutch and flywheel is) there was no oil at all present ??
Could it be a leak in the crankcase oil gasket just behind the flywheel?
Thx for the advice.

Most probably the rear crankshaft seal.
First thing to do is check the engine breather is clear.

Perhaps stupid question:( But where can I find this please ?

On the first picture is the location of engine breather filter(painted in red-the illustration is of a defender engine but is’s all the same) while the second picture explains the cleaning procedure.
I’d cleaned mine with isopropil alcohol and dried with a heat gun, but that didn’t cure the leak, but i can live with a few drops of oil on the driveway-at least till the next clutch change;)

The same thing hapened to me but in my case it was the crank oil seal.Is your clutch slipping if not it may just need the sump bolts tightening at the rear of the engine the cost of a new clutch and crank oil seal is £85 and the time to do the job

No,clutch is still working perfect. But I am afraid that when too much oil is entering this space , the clucht will be spoiled with the oil.
In each case, I will have the gearbox taken off and check the problem. I hope they do not need to remove the engine to release the gearbox from the engine. I see two bolt rather unreachable on top of the gearbox section:confused:

Thx for the pictures but I think the pictures are not from the same engine as mine ( TD5) .Is perhaps picture of 200 or 300 Tdi ?

Here are the pictures for Td5 (defender setup again). The design of bell housing and drain hole prevent clutch from being contaminated with engine oil (at least on 300 Tdi), but if it’s a big leak you should replace the seal ASAP. When there do the front gearbox seal too. …..and get genuine seals!!!

i have a 2005 td5 with manual gearbox and also have a small leek coming out of bell housing, LR say it is a input shaft oil seal on the gearbox that is weeping. Maybe i have a cranksahft oil seal leeking?

Thx guys for the help. In order to be sure that the oil is coming out of the bell housing , I will check the release nut first. Apparently there is a square formed nut in the bell housing that should normally not release any oil when unscrewing.
If yes, most probably it will be the rear crankshaft seal.

Depending on the oil colour and smell you can determine if you have a gearbox oil leak of a crankshaft oil leak. Most probably it will be the crankshaft oil leek.

thanks for that, i will check with LR, and as i am still under warantee i guess these oil seals should be covered?

Well all I can say is if I had a 2005 td5 that is weeping oil I would be crying my eyes out:eek: Tell LR weeping or no they fix it....weeping is not in the design specification;)

Generally, when the front gear box seal goes, it is inside the front extension housing, the oil travels down the thrust bearing sleeve and goes into the clutch.

I wasn't aware that Landrovers had problems with oil leaks. I thought this was a design plan to prevent corrosion of any part within 6' of the engine/gearbox/axles.;)
