V8i startup speed

When I start the engine (V8i) it revs to 2000-2500rpm & then very slowly settles down to idle, it does this at every startup regardless of engine temp. It runs & drives OK. It has just had new head gasket, temperature sender, ignition amp, coil. It has only done this since the head gasket replacement, previously it was only itermitant.

It's possible that the stepper motor is not functioning correctly, clogged with oiley misty gungy petroly stuff or even carbon deposits.

The stepper motor basicly establishes a base idle for the engine at tick over.
It's located at the back left side of the plenum and after disconnecting the electric plug can be unscrewed with a 32mm(?) spanner. Clean up the gunky looking plunger with contact cleaner and allow it to dry off before putting it back in.

Thats the first thing I'd look at before going deeper into the AFM etc.

If it works.......it's a cheap fix!.

Tried cleaning it but it still continues, does the cone push in against the spring with finger pressure as mine seems to be solid
