Dilemma time again..I went through this three years ago when the question was P38 or Disco..chickened out and bought the td5.
I will be looking to change in the summer with around £30kish..do I buy a three year old RR or a one year old well specd Disco.
I still find the looks of the D3 hard to accept, much prefer the RR but will the RR bankrupt me in years four and five of its life? Any high mileage RR owners out there with advice?
Also any thoughts on the 3.0 diesel against the Ford/Jag 2.7..is it the same thing a different way or is the 2.7 the more advanced unit. I was told the 3.0 BMW sourced unit was unburstable which sounds quite appealing.
Cheers

30K on ONE car?
Consider this:
Decent early-to-mid S2 Disco (before they fitted those awful halogen light units): £10k
Early-ish 300TDi 90 CSW : £7k
Random "project" (Series II/III, ex-military heap, Carmichael TACR, etc): £3k
leaving £10k to get a Freelander for the wife.

Either way it's going to be a Landrover. One with two years warranty left, and one with none. For £30k I would want as much peace of mind as possible.

Take your points..I kind of know that newer is better and will probably go down that road but I still lok at P38s and regret not owning one..having had two V8 classics in the past I`m temted to take the plunge but the things are now priced at a ridiculous level.
Keeping the TD5 and adding a project and F/L for the wife...I`ve got a V6 F/L..fabulous thing to drive..doesn`t do many miles so fuel not a problem..got it cheap because its a V6, would recomend it to anyone who doesn`t do high miles, saved about 2k over the same year model TD4..as for adding a project..I can only dream, I don`t have the space..maybe when I retire to the country...also already got two projects that not only take up a lot of time but eat me out of house and stable so to speak.
I need something that can tow a couple of tons if req. and also a reliable and comfortable car to run between West of Scotland and Yorkshire and N E Scotland..trips of 220 miles each. The TD5 is brilliant at this with great comfort on the motorway and good towing. Its in fantastic condition and I`ve rebuilt the thing under warranty including both electric roofs replaced, nearly a grand each time, and a new factory engine..not reconn but a cling film job from Solihul..another £4.5k thats on top of the usual discs all round, airspring, wheel bearing, A/C etc etc.when I look at it I wonder why I should part with it but its still worth something and for that reason it will sell easily and I can buy something a bit younger...plus in a few years I might not be in a position to afford to change and the difference will be too much, so thats a factor too..anyway maybe the D3 breadvan will have grown on me a bit more by the summer...
Saw a new D3 yesterday with side mouldings on the doors similair to the TD5 GS/ES..it breaks up the slab side and makes a big difference. I asked the salesman at the dealers and was told it is not a LR part but fitted by the customer, for a non standard part it looked like it should have been there and the one standing next to it looked wrong without them..makes you think.
cheers
Dave
If you go for an L322 RR its worth mentioning that the V8's sell for around £2000+ less than the diesel
£22k should get a 2002 V8 SE with 40k on the clock

Hi Grant..are you talking about the current RR model?..I haven`t seen them for much under 30k even with high miles. I would probably buy from LR dealer as warrannty is a must, I checked and a second year warranty will add around £1k..Its a lot and something I would not probably add afterwards but if I can negotiate screen price down slightly and agree second year plus towbar if needed is fitted.. is like getting £1500 off. I have successfully done this with my TDi300 and TD5, although then a second year was only around £550. I did not need it with the TDi but the TD5 would have bankrupted me..can understand why people are disillusioned with LR if they have an experience like that..end up going Jap, not something I would consider but I have been attracted to the Volvo, would do everything I want and probably be reliable.
Take your point on petrol being a lot cheaper, exactly why my other half runs about in a FL V6 and not a TD4. I only do around 12k/year in LR as five days a week and 25k/year spent at wheel of Galaxy engined petrol/ lpg Transit..smoother quieter & quicker than my TD5...just doesn`t have the class! At this annual mileage the difference with petrol / diesel would be say 17mpg to 22mpg or 160 gallons over 12000 miles..or probably over two years the same cost..and all with the pleasure of a V8...God am I trying to convince myself.
Cheers anyway I`ll keep you posted ..it won`t happen until the summer.

Seen high milers going for under 20k at auction now. Seem like cracking bargains to me, good luck :)

If you can stretch to £32K you can get a brand new TDV6 S Auto which is reasonably well spec'ed IMHO and you'll get 3 full years warranty
