Hi all,
Is there any way I can check whether my turbo is working?
I know there would probably be a major power loss if it wasn't, but I don't seem to be able to hear the tell-tale "whistle" I used to get off all previous turbo diesels I've had including the 300 Tdi and Freelander.
Cheers.

It's an odd one this. My old 300Tdi turbo was silent, or at least it spun too fast for my knackered ears to hear. When I first got the Td5 I thought there was something wrong with the turbo as it was so noisy. I've now come to the conclusion that I can't hear this turbo either. What I hear is the centrifugal filter spinning.
It's easy for me to tell the turbo is spinning. Sit in first gear at tickover and floor the accellerator and wait. Once mine gets to about 1500rpm it takes off like a scalded cat. If the turbo wasn't kicking in, I would expect a very slow accelleration. Reminding me of my old N/A 90.

I can't hear my TD5 either and yet the 2.5 Turbo in the minibus (see my avatar) - a Ford unit I think - has the sexiest turbo whistle imaginable.

td5 engine is too loud. me too, cant hear the turbo, but only the "annoying" centrifugal filter spinning. another way to know if turbo is doing its job is to fit a boost gauge. i just did that to my td5 over the weekend.
