I am guessing you are referring to the brake light cluster on Disco 1. If so, the only way I could remove it was to face the front of the car and use try to undo the screw "backhanded". It's a bitch to do. Removing the cluster is no easier. Good luck.

I ended up using a set of long nosed pliars as an extension to my fingers to do this. They are a pain to remove and I don't think (although I was tempted to try) removing the cluster will be any more helpful.
Plus, you can just guarnetee that you'll not be able to get a proper seal on them afterwards and it'll be another ingression of water point.

Done mine last week, got it out ok but getting the thing back in was a real pain. I was tempted to take the cluster out but found this even worse to get at. Taking the fold down seats out may help you get a better angle at them.

Having recently performed this task in a Discovery with rear seats I suggest;

Buy a large box of Elastoplast, a large bottle of Whiskey and have a shower before you start.
Approach the job from all angles, I tried facing forwards and reaching back, facing back and reaching forwards and one leg through each sun roof.
You will realise why you had a shower as at some point you will doubtless be in a position where your head is virtually up your ****!
After concluding this job is impossible apply the plasters to the cuts on the forearms, have a bath and drink the Whiskey.
Ask the Wife to change the bulb as after all she is used to putting small things in unlikely places.
I realise the above is of little help but at least you know others have suffered too.

Possibly the easier solution is to obtain a donor vehicle that has working rear lights and rebuild your Discovery on to it!

It's all so true.

Really enjoyed that. So true.

On an SII has anyone any idea why it is they eat these bulbs at roughly 12 month intervals but always in exactly the same way?

Mine has been munching them merrily.

Each time a look at the bulb which has been removed shows the upright that supports the filament has been eaten away on one side. The metal that has gone from the post is spread over the glass envelope as a black / mirrored deposit but only on one side.

Being an electronic engineer with 20/20 hindsight I would rename myself Ambrose Fleming and invent the radio valve... (tube in USA)

I think it's because the power conductors run right along side the glass and not under the metal cap as in the traditional arragement.
Has anyone had the same?

Suppose at least on an SII they are really easy to replace.

{Sorry!!}

JonD's post reveals the true nature of the 'Land-Rover' owner.

Any sane individual who owned a car thats design fault had just cost him a days labour, multiple lacerations and a dislocated scrotum to change a light bulb would sell it and buy a Mondeo!

Not so our Land-Rover owner who ignores such trivial problems and goes to the Forum to discuss in technical terms 'why the bulb blew in the first place!'

Its good to be in the company of like minded people and know I am not the only lunatic in the asylum!
