Hi guys,

What's the best motorway speed to give the best fuel economy on the Disco TD5 Auto, with and without Cruise Control?

I have a a 300 TDI and I find the between 55 + 60 on a run returns between 30 - 35 mpg.:D

Sorry cannot help with your version.

Hi Pete,

Yeah, the 300 Tdi is a bit of a different animal, I used to have a 300 Tdi ES "P" Reg. It was a great car and slightly more economical than the TD5, but then again it was a manual and my TD5 is an Auto.

Cheers,

The TD5 Auto doesnt go in to top gear until you hit 51-53 mph i find travelling at between 65-70 i can get 30+ out of mine the cruise control doesnt seem to make much difference

SII manual TD5 comment.

Does it want to go faster? Or is it happy where it is?
You can feel it I think - up the pedal and through the seat.

Supermarket diesel is generally rubbish. Put some good stuff in and see.

I found this hard to believe until mine was obviously bored at the usual speeds and it <wanted> to go more.

There's no equivalant, so far as I know, to an octane rating for diesel but they are clearly not all the same...

The fast stuff also turned in more MPG if you went careful with it...
Been trying to convince myself it was imaginary but I still don't think so.

Hi JonD,

Yes, it does want to go faster, it seems to like to be driven at 70mph (but will still willingly go more).

I don't know whether this is detrimental to the fuel economy though. Generally people are telling me the best economy is where the best torque is, i.e. at 1950rpm whereas at 70mph the engine s doing 2½k revs.
