hi all,
i was thinking about changing the gear box oil and oil sceen on my disco 97 r auto tdi and just wanted to ask is it a job for a DIY home job if so is there any nasty's to look out for:eek: as regards things to go wrong cheers chaps j :D

thanks chris great help just one other thing is it as easy as they make it sound and what are the benifits to doing this would i notice the differance it's just that i have recently bought the disco and although it has FSH it doesn't say if the gear oil has been changed the disco has done 120000 miles how often does it need changing i plan to change all oils in a short time i.e transfer box swivel ball oil (i think thats what it is called!!!!!!!!!!!) i have also read somewhere that landrover started to drain that oil and replace with maintance free grease is that correct can i do that my self if so what grease and where from as you can see i'm new to this thats why all the questions thanks in advance and any coments would be great

I was going to do this, but decided in the end that this would be one job the garage could do. I didn't fancy doing it lying on my back in the driveway on a cold wet weekend in winter and I was having a busy week anyway.
As for that one-shot grease, all the landie places sell it, and it is a replacement for the oil.
Buy yourself a Haynes manual, lots of good info in there, and maybe get a RAVE CDrom. I see those sold online, basically a Landie manual done in pdf files.

Usual signs of the filter blocking is problems with gears changing. Usually too late or banging. The oil provides drive through the torque converter and also the valve chest for operating the gear bands and clutches.
If it's Red it should be OK, if it's Dark Brown or getting Black, change it.
It is a fairly easy job, if you can use a Ramp or Pit. On some vehicles with Vee engines, the exhaust causes problems. Straight engines, it is usually just a case of taking the pan off with 6 screws.
