View Full Version : Fitting Diff Guards

Ive just bought front and back diff guards for my 96 Disco, the wrap around slider type. My first question is... does anybody know the size/thread of the two bolts that I need to fit the back one. They would be the same as the ones holding on the trackrod onto the front diff. My second question ... The front one looks like I will have to take off the track rod to access the fitting bolts and also slide the rod through a holed plate in the diff guard, How easy/ difficult is this?
Thirdly while i was under the disco I notices I had a large amount of "slop" in my front prop. Am i right in thinking I need to replace my universal Joints? again is it a DIY job or does it need to go into the local mechanic?
Thanks for any help or advice ... Jon ...
Screw size for the rear diff guard is as far as I am aware a M10 metric tread , as for thr track rod I think you mean the sterring damper is attached to diff via a bracket on the front this bracket will depending on you guard need to be removed , u shouldn't need to remove the track rod to put the guard on !!
have attached pic off the version I made based on this design to show you what I mean . also depending on how bad the state of the UJ , you should be able to do a DIY on this .
hope this of some help
cheers

There should be no rotational "slop" in the UJ's. There will be lots of slop in the prop to road-wheels (ie axle). I think my old 90 used to have almost 1/4 turn. The following Disco was not nearly as bad, but neither one showed drive problems.

If not M10 metric tread it could be 3/8 UNF (Same as propshaft bolts) - was for my TD5 Defender.

Thanks all,
as for thr track rod I think you mean the sterring damper
When I first got under the disco I thought "that looks like a steering damper thingy" but after reading a few posts on diff gaurds and what size thread the bolts are I came to the concusion it must be the track rod. LOL. Also I get the impression from other posts that its an imperial bolt i need. When I have found one that fits I will let you all Know.
Looks like I'll be fitting some new UJ's to my front prop soon. Thanks ... Jon ...
