Recently failed MOT on excess emissions. Engineer asked if it had been chipped as this sometimes causes the engine to overfuel. I said that Jeremy Fearns had reprogrammed the fuel control Took it to Jeremy 10 months after he had done his work and he was very helpful. We went out to clear the cobwebs with a bit of exciting driving took it to his local MOT station and it passed with flying colours. So the moral seems to be that prior to the test give it a bit of a thrashing. Any thoughts on this.

Yep i have heard that mentioned here before ... if you get a nice tester he might even advise it or even do it for you ...

That's exactly what my tester does. Stick it in second and cane it round the block. You should have seen the trail of soot...on the road!
Ran as clean as a whistle afterwards.

Hi
dead right, I have a Fearn twiddled Isuzu, 170hp worth in my RRclassic and without fail over the last 7 years I have to give it a good clear out pre MOT.

Done that with every Diesel motor Ive owned. A nice MOT man once failed one on emmissions, told me to take it down the road in 2nd gear, brought it back and passed her straight away. since then alway give it a bit of thrashing on the way to MOT station.

According to the MOT man, it is a build up of oil in the bottom hose going to the intercooler. This comes from the turbo, he rekonds they all leak a bit.
When they rev the engine for the emissions, this gets pulled into the engine and screws up the emissions. Giving it a bit of stick occassionally stops it building up.
seems like the mot is becoming more like another indirect tax, me younger siblings series 3 recently failed on headlamp adjustment, now that the test is computerised, there is no second chance, its another £40+ for another test,i know it's neccesary but surely there should still be a bit of leeway, seems like the honest motorist is paying for the dis-honest AGAIN.
what's the general consensus?

Take it back and complain, we are now allowed to adjust head lamp aim during the Test.( and top up washer bottles) They should know that.

templ4r,
that sounds interesting now,he reckoned that because he had to take the bezel off, that it would be a re-test, is he being pedantic, or what?, is it right that with the new certificate, it's all in real time, so to speak, and that ministry men can be logged in to what the tester is doing, sitting in a car over the road, with a laptop, and if he leaves his station, for whatever, he has to log out or he could lose his ticket. or was he just scaremongering?

The VOSA man can sit over the road with his laptop, he can call up the details of who is Testing currently and get a picture of Him/Her. He can then go in and ensure the person doing the Test is the same as his picture and matches the one on the card.
When we start a Test, the Time is printed on the check sheet. When we enter the Test details, the Pass or Fail ( which we must do now, as our cards will not be cleared) will have the Time on it.
This bit is of importance if you don't have a Current MOT, if you have been stopped by the Police and get a Producer. His Ticket will have the time he stopped you, if you get a Test before you go to the Police with your Documents, the Certificate ( if you have Passed) will have the time of issue on it.:)
There is no "Official" time limit for a Test, but 40 -50 minutes is deemed acceptable. If you pump them out every 15 minutes, VOSA will be in touch via the Computer to ask why, then they come for a few words.
There is nothing to stop you taking a bit of time, fitting bulbs, adjusting lights, topping up washers, etc. As long as it is done after the Examination.
These are put down as PRS's. You get a Fail, but a Pass is issued as well.
If there are covers or a grill in the way, I'd get you to remove them, Retest under the Fast track, and issue a Pass. We don't charge for them.

Get a new tester. I've yet to experience the new test, but the guy I've been back to for the past 20 years has always been fair, and never charged for a re-test.
When I had the pleasure of taking my old 90, he delighted in telling me that one of the back bulbs was out. With a grin on his face, he threw me a bulb and screwdriver and told me if I could fit it by the end of the test, he would pass me. I did, and he did, and he didn't charge for the bulb. You can see why I go back. Not all of them are trying to rob you. Some just want to make an honest living. Make sure you find one.
the garage that i use has always been great in the past, i fact probably more than fair, however, the new procedure just seems to have them in a bit of a tiz, it's probably just until they become more familiar with the system. if the new test works as is hoped and is linked into the P.N.C. database, along with tax and insurance details, and the coppers combine the info with more roadside A.N.P.R.S.checks, then i'm all for it, as i keep saying to myself if you have nothing to hide you have nothing to be afraid of....

This was my first experience of an MOT as I have been running newer cars for the past 10 years. It was a bit like waiting in a doctor's surgery.
It seems from replys that the thrash/cane/floor option is the best to clear the tubes and hopefully pass the emissions test.
My partner has a Daihatsu 4 Trak 2.8 diesel which is due its test next week so a thrash down the M62 is called for prior to the test. I'll drop in to give the result
