Heres a sad story....
Some may remember I posted about a strange noise on the Disco recently. Well it was still happening so fearing something major going wrong I decided to a bit of background checking on the 'service history'.

Vehicle bought new in Boston Lincolnshire, Service History book stamped up to 100,000 miles by main dealer (Boston Tractors) original owner sells back to main dealer, main dealer passes on to trade auction, vehicle bought by the second hand dealer and sold to second owner who has it for 10 months. He then PX's it for another later disco and then I came along.

When I bought the disco about two years ago the dealer of the second hand car lot told me that 'It has had all the belts done by the last owner', I asked him specifically about the Cam belt and he said it had been replaced for certain so not to worry he said. even had a hand written entry in the service history book as 'cam belt change 110000 miles', but no stamp. One of the things I done was to phone the original owner about its history. He replied that the vehicle had been main dealer serviced and that money was no object, fine I think, got a good 'un here and carry on the servicing myself. Now these belts were supposedly changed by owner No2 who had the vehicle for only 10 months.

I finally found out last week that owner No2 didnt change the Cam belt, no one had, only the Fan belt, the original cam belt was changed at 61,000 miles by the main dealer, with now 132000 miles on the clock, as a precaution I booked the old girl in to a local independent LR mechanic last week for a belt change today.

Picked it up tonight, they showed me the parts they had to replace, the belt was almost wafer thin AND with about a quarter of an inch shaved off of one side, the casing was full of rubber powder. The needed modification that 300TDI's should have had was never done by the main dealer, the large sprocket from the pump shaft was distorted and had to be replaced, the tensioner was shot to pieces!. The pump bracket was twisted as well and needed replacement, all the old bits were laid out on a piece of cardboard for me to see.
Oh, and the strange noise that comes and goes?.....it's still there but turns out it could be the Alternator bearings. At least I know now its not the Cam belt tensioner:D
The lads at Phoenix Services Sawbridgeworth who fixed it for me are a good bunch and come well recomended, its there the old girl will go from now on:)
So anyone buying a second hand disco, check for sure that the modification WAS done and put a new belt on it for peace of mind:eek:

We still get the odd one slip through, I've had one that was about half the width.

To test for which belt it is that is noisey.

Take the Serpentine belt off and run the engine, that will discount the alternator, tensioner and water pump bearings for noise. If the noise is still there, then it's the Timing Belt.

In an effort to save you a bit of hard earned. The alternators on the disco are supposed to be "sealed for life", so when the bearings go, so does the alternator. When mine went (and when they really go, it is unmistakable!) I took it along to an old fashioned auto electrician, who split the case open, replaced the bearings and even put in a S/H rotor as mine was scored, all for the princely sum of £40.

If you can get near S Yorks I can give you directions.

Dflite. Interesting that yours should be a '97 mod. but without the timing belt updates. What is the build date?
Mine is a 8/97 build (bought new) and when I changed the belt at 90000km. the belt looked like new. Also it was all the latest spec. inso much as the belt locating flange on the crankshaft gear (not tension roller), revised injection pump bracket etc.
I also thought it had a sus. P gasket so dismantled to replace. (was OK) It had been originally installed with the metal/silicon rubber type which I had been informed was never fitted as an original, only a replacement part.
Wonder if the export models (to Aus.)were built different to UK supply or even the engine coming from a different country?
