anybody knows what is the plastic grille on top of the dash over the radio is for? it is a black plastic piece abt a foot long and abt an inch wide, beside the long rubber tray. i dropped a small washer in yesterday. how can i open up / dismantle that thing and retrieve the washer?

It's a handy storage space for small washers. I believe Land Rover call it a rattle generator.

The manual stresses that it is purely to allow some heat to escape from the radio, not a heater vent.

yep. purely a vent to allow heat to escape from radio. You will have to take radio out to retrieve washer. Or just go along with another L.R. rattle!!!
