Hi All :)

I am new here, so thankyou for the great support site.

I have a 1998 Freelander and for the last 2 months, there has been a stench of Amonnia coming in through my open windows and sunroof!!!

Its not coming from the engine as it smells fine in the car.

Its just when I open the windows, it blows in, the smell is so strong, it makes my eyes water!

At first I thought a cat or a fox had peed somewhere, but no, I have jet washed it to death!

My mechanic said there is nothing chemical in a car that smells remotely like ammonia!

I've just took the car in for a new exhaust box, so I'm hoping that will resolve it............. but I doubt it!

Anyone got any ideas............. before I resort to a gas mask in the summer???? :D :D

Thanks All

Stormie XX

Not too my knowledge.
Catalysts [part of exhaust] can give off some strange smells, but ammonia is a new one on me.
Sorry

Certain types of plastic and rubber can give off strange smells when subjected to direct heat.

Has it been cleaned/valeted ? Maybe someone used ammonia based cleaners. Could it be from aircon (if you have it)?

As Dave says, Cats do smell when they are breaking down, but it's more of a Sulphury Bad eggs smell.

Could it be from aircon (if you have it)?

Car air con systems don't use ammonia or R717, they usually use Hydroflourine R134A. I would go with the ammonia based cleaner theory.
Or something picked up from your boots and transferred to your carpets.

Doubt very much it would be the air con as already pointed out. A/C in cars operate on refrigerant R134a and it doesnt smell very nice. But the A/C system doesnt hold much so if it was leaking then it wouldnt be long before it was empty.

Hi and welcome,
Which additive are you using as a windscreen cleaning fluid? Check if that does not contain ammonia

Thankyou all for your replies guys!!!

Anyway - no cats have been near my car except for one neatly trimmed pussy!!!:D :D :D

I don't have air con - I'm a peasant, so it can't be that!

Additives in windscreen cleaning fluid???? Erm......... where's the windscreen cleaning fluid bottle??? LOLOL!!!! Ohhhhh, you mean the bottle with an squirt of fairy and a gallon of water??

I must admit - since the mechanic took my back exhaust box off yesterday, it hasn't smelt quite as bad, so, apart from it sounding like a sherman tank now, we'll see if it comes back when he puts the new box on tomorrow.

(And, no, I have no idea how much it'll cost - I didn't bloody ask!)

Thanks again guys for your help and the warm welcome.

By the way - am I the only female here????:flower2:

It sounds like(or smells like ;o) you may have a poor seal around the tail/hatch. When you open a window the 'pressurisation' of the cab is released and this allows suction to pull in fumes from around the poor hatch seal. Can happen if the vehicle has been involved in a rear end shunt. A nightmare to find and fix.. Worth running it past a decent bodywork man to check..

Hi Guys

Just thought I'd update you on the source of my wee wee smell!!! :D:D

The bloody back exhaust had come off its bracket and was merrily burning a hole and melting a HUGE hole into my back bumper/wheel arch!

Apparently this is 'quite' a common problem with FL back boxes??

Anyway - one £70 exhaust replacement later, I have a lovely smelling car........... no ammonia or otherwise.............

But a great big whacking hole in My wheel arch! :(
