The biggest problem is the bleed pipes to the header tank block, so any air cannot get out. The water is filled via the bottom of the engine, the air cannot escape.

The V6 Ford Granada, Cologne 2.3 and 2.8 engines have the thermostat in the bottom hose, they suffer the same problem when you fill them up.

Air locks are a big problem in cars where you have a header tank. You must ensure the bleed hoses are clear.

You should feel them get warm when the engine is running. If the header tank doesn't warm up at the same time as the engine, the pipes are not doing their job.
