Hi,just bought a freelander 1.8 2000(2 weeks ago).I pointed out on the test drive there was a very big vibration coming from under neath the front end,(sounded like the exhaust?).
When i came to buy it i was told the problem had been fixed(Great i thought).But no !!!As i drove away from the garage the noise was there!
I reported it straight away.I took it back to be fixed,to be told 1 hour later it was ready,problem still there!!
I've taken it back again,to now be told it might not be able to be solved?
What i would like to know is where i stand?
Leave it there to be fixed?
Try to get money and old car back?
If there is someone out there who may be able to advise me that would be great!!!!!

If the vibration is from the front and they can't find it, it is probably from the IRD. This could be caused by the VC.
Do not accept the vehicle under any circumstances, unless they cure the fault. If it is the IRD, you are looking towards £1000 plus for a repair. The VC is about £500. ( including fitting )
It is not acceptable to have the vibration, if they don't know what it is, they are not going to cure it, get your money back. There are plenty of good ones about.

They know what it is [a common fault on Freelanders] they are just trying to "scam" you.
Give it back and walk away.

But what is the IRD/VC?

VC is the Viscous Coupling, it lets the vehicle drive on a road in 4WD.
The IRD is the Intermediate Reduction Drive. It's the expensive part at the front which amongst other things, sends the drive through 90 degrees and to the rear diff.
These are the major problem areas with the Freelander. Apart from the 1.8 petrol engines head gaskets and hydraulic tappets.
Have a look at this, you can print it and take it to the Garage.

hope you got waranty on this car they dont like giving money back get an independant check on the car and list all faults and get them to sort it all out did you get the car from a dealership or local garage

HI,i got the freelander from a local garage,but i have also just discovered oil in the coolant tank( is this the headgasket problem?).

get your money back now - I'm sorry to say this but they've had you. I bought a '98 2.0Di from a small dealer - 6 months later I had to replace the IRD and VCU setting me back £1300. There was probably a slight whining noise on the test drive but I would've taken this as a Freelander feature. Wish I'd swotted up on Freebies beforehand...

I take it back tomorrow to get my car and money(if the car has'nt been sold).
But i could still do with knowing about the oil in the coolant(am i right in thinking this is a headgasket problem),they have informed me today on the phone,this is not a problem,i think differently.
I could just do with knowing,so i know what i'am talking about!!!

Oil should not be in the coolant... whatever the cause!

The only thing that should be in the coolant system is water and antifreeze. If anyone tells you different, they are liars.
I hope that is plain enough. I can't think of any other way to phrase it.
The only way oil can get into the Freelander coolant system is by the engine or the cooler in the IRD. The IRD isn't under pressure, the water is, it will fill the IRD first.
The engine oil will turn a grey/white emulsion and cover everything, the sides of the expansion tank are the most obvious. It is common for the sump oil to turn Grey/white as well. Have you checked that yet?
They are hoping to fool you into keeping it for the Warranty period, if it fails first, they will try every trick to not fix it, after that it is your problem.
Mention an AA or RAC inspection and Trading Standards, they will probably have a change of heart and take it back.

It may also be worth turning up with a letter staing that you are REJECTING the vehicle under the SALE OF GOODS ACT.
Keep a copy yourself.
