View Full Version : Tyres & VCU

I have just bought a 2002 TD4. It has new tyres on the front and part worn (about 5mm left) on the rear. Is this OK or should I swap front & rear ... I've read about the VCU being sensitive to differences in the wheel circumference front and back. The owners manual also states new tyres should go on the back, I guess for this reason? (but it doesn't say why!)

Any advice gratefully received. Cheers, Andy.

Because of the difference in gearing, that is why there is a VC. ( amongst other reasons, no third diff, etc)

We fit new to the rears. We find it gives less trouble. Some people don't agree, but you take your choice. Try them in both positions and see which you think handles better.

Thanks Chris, just a further question ...

By less trouble, do you mean to handling or the VCU?
I'm happy with the way the car handles now, just didn't want to put any unnecessary strain on things if swapping wheels would alleviate this.

This is what I read - directed at VW in parts, but similar I guess ...

Less wear and tyre noise.

A lot of vehicles have VCs. Audi, VW, Hyundai, Renault, Jaguar,..... But they don't seem to fail as much. Mind you, we had an X type Jag smash the bevel drive casing 3 weeks ago.

I like the Electro Magnetic Clutch on some models of the Hyundai Santa Fe.
