Saturday morning had the clutch fail on my 2005 freelander 1.8 (8000 on the clock ), halfway round a roudabout and exiting onto a duel carriadgeway, with wife and both kids in, and it wouldnt engage any gears.
Luckily i had enough momentum to cut accross a lane of traffic, and pull to the side of the road.
Landrover assistance were fantastic, and when the hire company said there wern`t any cars available till Monday,LR assistance straightaway contacted another hire company and got us a car that evening .
Turned out to be a £30,000 mercedes E class !...........trust landrover to have my car fixed by today ! :(

Funny, I let my Landrover assistance cover lapse until my clutch went on the A41 by Apex coner one cold dark night. Had to ring and rejoin on the spot which wasnt cheap. Called them out several times since and they have been great.

Hi, I recently bought my first landrover, a freelander. when you say your clutch failed, do you mean it went instantly?
I have had many cars and done a few clutches over the years but they seldom just go. Normally I would expect there to be wear and slipping as a prelude to the car being undrivable. Is there a common problem with clutches just letting go? You guys have me worried here.
My car has done over 102000mls the clutch was replaced last year before i bought the car but still worrying.

This is a common complaint,it seems the slave cylinder bracket bends(and then snaps) allowing the slave to come out under pressure leaving it broke, the whole hydraulics have to be replaced in 1 as you cannot buy the bits individually(stupid design)as you cannot bleed them ,hence you cannot replace the fluid.

Hi, Budah from South Africa. I bought My 2003 Freelander td4 in January 2006. It has has just covered 73 000 km and is still under warranty till July 2006. The clutch pedal also suddenly dropped to floor during an off-road outing. I was not very impressed as my family went with on this trip. Had the vehicle cool down for about 1 hour then tried clutch again, which seemed to build up after cool down. I was left with little grace to get the vehicle home. Vehicle is currently with Landrover Dealer to inspect and remedy (they've had it for 5 days already - but they're too busy to attend to it). They tell me that they suspect that the slave cylinder might be faulty and that there is a big possibility that the clutch could have burnt out. It will cost some R13500 to fix AND this work cannot be done under factory warrantee. What a great let down.
How can you be secure about warranty plans when I see that this is a common Landrover problem with the slave cylinder. Is this inherently designed to keep the workshops busy? and the money flowing in? Come one guys - we expect must more of LR. My wife's 1997 Uno Fire has done 135000 km with no clutch (or any other problems). Is the LR name just over-rated? I seems it has little substance.
I've tried to obtain some guidance in terms of generic Freelander problems, at least to plan ahead and provide some cover. LR itself has not responded yet - not even when I enquired THREE TIMES from the dealership about Extended Warrantees. Some other local firm were able to provide quotation within half an hour.

[quote=Cobies]Hi, I recently bought my first landrover, a freelander. when you say your clutch failed, do you mean it went instantly?
We had the car from new, there was no splipping of the clutch, and gear changes were fine prior to it breaking , however now we have got the car back with it fixed ,we have noticed the clutch is now much more forgiving than it was, the wife didnt like the car because she kept stalling it all the time at low revs.
It would seem that there must have been some fault with the clutch from new , though landrover would only say that it was an internal clutch fault.
Prior to the 1.8 we owned a TD4 which is much more lazy through the gears than the 16v unit ,i knew the clutch was quite snappy from new, and always gave it a little more revs when pulling off ,had just put this down to the different nature of the engine/clutch set up.

Just to clarify the above, it was the slave cylinder that went also, for a few weeks prior I experienced difficulty in changing gears. Luckly I was in nuetral when it finaly went, unluckly while I was fiddling with the gear stick I rolled backwards and hit a Lexus.
