Kingsley Holgate and the African Rainbow Expedition are in NW Mozambique at the moment, and will be travelling from Tete to Cahora Bassa with a contingent of journalists from the 24th April.
See http://www.africanrainbowexpedition.co.za and http://www.kingsleyholgate.co.za for some general information.
As the sponsor of their communications equipment, I will be joining the expedition for a few days.
While I was speaking with Kingsley, we discussed the possibility of getting a bunch of "malaria warriors" together to join the expedition. I said I'd put the idea to people on the forum.
I know it's short notice, but it was difficult to get Kingsley, myself, and Motorola marketing people together at the same time, in the same place. This past weekend we finally all met at a Motorola conference in Swaziland.
The basic idea is this:
1) Me (and hopefully a group of LR enthusiasts) leave around 22nd April and travel to Tete where we meet up with Kingsley on the afternoon of the 24th. Motorola will provide radios for the trip up, and I'm going to speak with LRSA about providing t-shirts and caps etc., but all other costs would have to be covered by the individual travellers. Depending on how many people there are, Captain Morgan might also be convinced to play along. ;)
2) The journalists wil be flying into Tete, and will be met by a convoy of Landrovers that will take them to the expedition base, and will probably take in the local market, a presentation of mosquiito nets at a village or two, lots of singing and dancing, and a FAT party on the banks of the river that evening.
3) Over the next few days the expedition will travel by LR and inflatables down the river to Cahora Bassa. There will be some rough going (really for the benefit of the journo's :D ) and they'll get a good taste of African travel, as they stop in very remote villages to distribute nets, retrieve malaria data etc.
4) There will be other activities planned which I will be discussing with Kingsley and LRSA over the next few days.
I need to get an idea in principal, how many people are interested in joining the expedition, even for a few days so that we can plan something worthwhile.
I had the pleasure of spending a few days with the expedition in Pemba, Mozambique last year, and had a fantastic time. Kingsley and his crew are quite happy to have people join them, as long as they pay their own way, and help out with the expedition from time-to-time. It's a great feeling to be involved in a very worthwhile cause, and you experience something quite special when you hand out mosquito nets to mums with babies, knowing that you could very well be saving a life. Last year the expedition distributed 250,000 nets in Tanzania alone. Considering that mums often sleep under these nets with two or more children, that means that well over 1 million lives have been affected by the expedition.
Plese drop me an e-mail or PM if you're interested, or post it here on this thread. Any ideas will also be much appreciated.
Regards,
Marc
