Well after driving the Landy back from Arran last night I noticed my tempoary fix on the oil leak from the back of the petrolpump had died so as I'm off uni now for 2 whole weeks I've decided to make a start on the few jobs the Landy needs doing

in no particular order these are

1) make a proper gasket for the pump and not just bodge it with instant gasket this time

2) fit the better mirrors I brought off an LDV van as the wing mounted ones are useless

3) fit my downpipe once I've been to Alloway and collected it ( cheers Andy :) )

4) fit my new tow ball and wire the electrics up

5) recover the seat bases as they both look like a dogs been at them

6) buy a grease gun and grease up everything that needs greasing ie TRE's propshaft etc etc

7) adjust the steering box to get the last bit of play out of it

8) do anything else that I;m bound to find wrong or falls off in the meantime

and fix the g/f's car aswell as the accelaratoir cable keeps sticking still her VW makes my landy look reliable hehe

Well yesterday I managed to get several jobs done :)

includsing fixing my g/fs VW so thats me allowed out to fix the landy for the next 2 weeks

I also did my petrol pump gasket, fitted my mirrors and adjusted my steering box which helped a bit but ive since discovered that I need a new steering bar as the one is banana shaped and a set of track rod end's wouldnt go amiss either as two of them have a bit of play in them ,I knew I'd find over jobs I also adjusted the play I had in one of the swivel housings aswell luckily just taking out a shim or two cured it ( phew)

not working on it today as Im under orders to not get mucky as we are off out later for a sunday lunch up at the Clachaig Inn up in Glencoe :yay: and as I wont be driving I can have a drinkie or 3

Glad to see somebody else doing work to their landy.
Its amazing what you find wrong with them, when you start having a good look. Don't look too hard though as it may cost you a fortune.
GAZ

It certtainly is Gaz

especially as I spent at least 50 mins underneath it when I went to look at it checking everything out and the chassis was good etc before saying I,d buy it.l I dont know how the hel I missed the bent arm ,reckon I could of got a bit more off the price I paid if I had:) mind you as I only paid £700 for it with 10 months mot and it had got a load of new bits on it ie water pump, alternator ( although I had to replace it as it siezed up on the drive home), radiator, and the exhaust from rear to the down pipe was new dunno why he left the old downpipe on tho as its covered in exhaust bandages and there was a complete set of brake shoes front and rear and wheel bearings in the bacvk aswell so I cant really complain.

still get these few minor jobs out the way and it'll be a decent old bus:yay:

job for today is if it doesnt rain ill be putting my towball on and I might even start on recovering my seats at least I've got fairly comfy ones the previous owner had very kindly fitted some defender 90 seats but the bases are rather chewed so i'll be usin the material off the middle seat as I have a cubby box to go there to repair the 2 torn outer bases

Hi,

I can understand why the old down-pipe was left on if it's a 3 bolt manifold connection! It's a total pain to replace, you have to jack the front end right up, and remove the nearside wheel to wheedle it out! Unless you are lucky enough to have a pit of course, but from what I have seen of your posts so far, you have an on street garage like mine!:hahaha:

It's good fun though, and I always find that a simple check over at the weekend usually turns into an excuse to stay outside tinkering with something!

well it looks as if as soon asI take the bandage off the pipe will fall into 2 peices so hopefully the only time it will need to be up in the air is putting the rteplacement on , mind you I might just get my local garage to put it on for me as they do a good job and cheap too as last month they fitted a new clutch to the girlfriends golf for just 2 hours labour which just under £50 as I supplied the parts mind you the clutch for it cost another £65

23rd Apr 2003, 10:44
well I didnt do anything on the landy yesterday as rain stopped play ended up decorating the bathroom instead :Cross:

still as its sunny today im going to try and straighten the bent steering rod and fit my new trackrods ends if i can get it staightened id not i'll have to look for one

ammiescot
24th Apr 2003, 08:29
well didnt do the steering arm or track rods as it was nice I decided to repaint the bumpers etc in black however in doing this I spilt almost half a tin of black paint on my bonnet when I deciuded to paint the windscreen fram ( which didnt get any paint on it) so I ve ended up with a camo paint job ,dont look too bad either just need to get some more green to do the roof now tho as it was limestone and now it looks odd

ammiescot
10th May 2003, 08:07
well thats all the minor jobs done now :)

just got the steering tube and track rods to do,

the exhaust downpipe was actaually pretty easy to fit the extra bit of hieght of the ex mil chassis meant the front didnt need to be jacked up that high (yes i did use axle stands while i was under it),tho sometime soon the exhaust manifold will need replacing as ive noticed theres a crack in it

changed the carb aswell to a slightly less worn one and i can now get 18mpg on a run :) and 14 ish round town which cant be sniffed at,though a weber will be aquired when funds permit the frivolity of buying one

recovered my seat bases by recyling the material off the middle seat to make new covers, and used parts of the foam aswell.and during one of the wet days this week I made a centre storage box to take the place of the centre seat
and i fitted a pair of spot lights aswell

after not doing anywork the landy for ages except painting it yellow

went mad today and fitted some new back lights as the old ones were dull , went to my local caravan shop to get some bits for our caravan and found a set of caravan rear lights that were just right for the landy

also replaced the 2 peice tailgate with a safari back door and repainted all the galvanised cappings with hammerite

just waiting for my new exhaust manifold to arrive as the old cracked and was costing me a fortune in fire clay to keep the noise down as exhaust paste wasnt up to the job

actually did another few jobs on the landy yesterday as it was quiet on the work front

replaced my dented front wing with one I aquired from a scrapyard at a cost of a tenner amazingly all the bolts came out and went back in ok from start to finish including connecting the wiring back up that took me just under 2 hours :)

finally got round to fitting the brake shoes that had been rattling about in the back since getting the landy.
mind you replacing the them was another matter and it took me just under an hour to do the back ones the front ones were a right pain as someone had rounded off the nut on the adjuster and had to get the local garage to weld a nut onto it ,once that was done they were as easy as the back shoes to change

plus I also bolted the defender front seats in properly as there was only 2 bolts on each one and put some new seat belts in aswell as the old ones were getting freyed

Well done Andy, nice to get a few jobs done isn't it?

BTW I finally got that Camac put on my spare wheel yesterday - having given up on my nearest tyre bay cos I think he's a ripoff, I went to McConechys in Forfar (I think they are Scotland-wide?) - fiver to swap the tyres, balance the new one and dispose of the old one. Not bad I reckon!:p

the next job is to get another stater solenoid as the one wire has brok off onside so I have to use another bit of wire from the battery to start it

then a set of doortops and window channel and some door seals plus finances allowing some chequer plate sill covers to hide the scabby sills

ammiescot
24th Aug 2003, 07:31
yup lightning another repaint is on the cards mind you this one I'm going to do properly and strip the old paint off . There is a few patches of welding to be done on the bulkhead ,typical series 3 , the one bit is around the top door hinge and the other bit is just below the bonnet hinge so once thats all done the bodywork should be ok for a good while

just spent the last 2 and a bit days in the girlfriends dads garage with a hot air paint stripping doodah a paint scraper ,2 litres of primer 3 litres of oxford blue ,a few rollers and a paint brush and the landy is now a nice shiny blue :) and a welder to fix the holes in the bulkhead

took me 12 hours in total to get most of the old layers of paint off and another 4 hours of painting plus several hours of tinkering with her dads landy while waiting for paint to dry,
just got the wheels and front grille to paint silver and the crossmember to repaint

pictures coming soon and thats the last time I'm painting it for the forseable future

the old petrol engine was getting a bit tired and was using a gallon of oil a week

so I luckily managed to find a diesel engine and spent 11 hours yesterday fitting it over at a mates over in Argyll ( cheers Chris )

and the results is that its a bit slower with a top speed of around 50 ish but its great on the fuel

so...hot air gun eh...
did briefly try this with a blowtorch, but it didn't like itand th ealuminium started popping about, presumably a shade hot. Anyway, was the hot air gun man enough to allow for th removal of any army paint that was on it. i've got the two rear sides of my car to paint, but the paint on it is really nasty and sanding that stuff tends to eat sanders. do you reckon the hot air gun will shift it?

good old 1" and the 2" brushes, came up really well. had a couple of problems. when i did the wings it rained that night and the rain sat on the wing tops giving it a really light greeny colour in places. also i ran out of green paint! hence why the rad panel, back door and part of the passanger door have been painted black! I enjoy painting but like ant job its 80% before hand 10% doing the job and 10% finishing. I cheated on the windo sills. and just painted them black as they were covering in all sorts of paint. and was hard to remove. but it came up really well. I am hoping to sell it soon but before so i may change it back to the 2.25 pet and get through and MOT, ive got a pair of LWB springs up the garden that can replace the exploded  ones on it, watch this space. also the bulkhead and inside all need TLC. altough this would be a great project i need to get my county sold to fund it. any offers?
