Hi all,
I have looked at your web site from afar for a while now; I can see that the help and assistance given by fellow members is second to none.
I live in Ireland and we previously had a 1998 Disco 2.5td as an everyday workhorse – now sadly gone, never to be forgotten.
My reason for looking at your site is that I am currently looking for a 30yr old or older (tax exempt etc here) land rover/range rover etc to do some occasional weekend work – towing a trailer, small bit of offroading etc. I might occasionally also carry some passengers. Personally I would prefer a diesel powered vehicle, slightly getter mpg etc (I think?), however not very fussy. I have seen some comments that a V8 RR auto is good for offroading, what kind of mpg would you get from one of these?
One final silly question - what are the legal requirements in the UK – if I purchase a vehicle besides insurance and valid licence what do I need to legally drive the vehicle on the roads (tax, mot)?
My budget is very small about £ 700, but I need a landie, which needs very little work as my wife and I are building our house at present (I just would not have the time to do any major repairs - or the money) Perhaps someone can help – all suggestions welcome. Thank you.
Declan.

Hello, welcome :)

Firstly, if you are looking at a diesel LR / RR over 30 years old, the original engines at that time were naturally aspirated, ie no turbo. While they are relatively powerful at the bottom end, they are not fast, and they are underpowered for heavy towing. So you might be better off with one that has a later TD or TDi engine transplanted into it. Or a V8, perhaps with LPG to reduce the running cost of fuel.

£700 will get you a reasonably series 2/3 if you are prepared to look at a few heaps before the right one turns up :p and if you are also prepared to get your hands dirty to keep it running nicely.

As for legal requirements, apart from licence and insurance, you need an MOT - annual inspection for all vehicles over 3 years old - and road tax, but this is free if the vehicle was constructed before 1973.

Look for a vehicle with 12 months MOT on it, as that will give you a good start, but beware that an MOT certificate is no guarantee that a vehicle is in good condition, it's just an indication of a minimum standard of roadworthiness.

HTH :)

Hi Declan!

I did see a nice pre-75 motor on www.ebay.ie recently... I think it was in Kildare.
