I was just treating 'The Love of my life' to some new rear pads when I noticed the offside rear panel was 'floating in the breeze'.
The return at the bottom of the rear wing appeared to have corroded and was no longer attached to the mud flap bracket.
On closer inspection this was not the cause. There is a mild steel plate bolted to the bottom of the wheel arch (3 bolts) and supported by a stay back to the floor the mud flap is then attached to the bottom of the plate as is the bottom of the rear wing.
This plate looked OK but when all the mud was cleaned off it was a lace curtain, almost completely rotten. Having no rigidity left the mud flap had caused the plate and the rear wing to flex and fatigue. (The main wheel arch was in good condition)
Not the 'pinnacle of design' to hang a mud flap off a thin unsupported plate.
A new Aluminium plate is in production and I am considering reducing the length of the mud flap to just sufficient to protect the rear end whilst reducing the wind load.
Apologies if this has been covered before but a quick inspection could save you a hole in the wing!

Everything under my 95 Disco looks clean, dry and like new, black under seal not even a drop of oil or dust to pick up on a rag. But then I wax the back sides of the rims. Enjoyable to work on a clean vehicle.

Beemer, I am so jealous, can you get me a Green Card and I will move to the Sunshine State.
I live down a farm track, the Farmer is currently performing the old English task of 'Muck Spreading' (He gets marginally more muck in the field than on the track). The track is also used to transport Sheep from A to B which by observation appears to have a laxative effect. The final part of my route is through a pasture with free range Geese.
The result of this 'Rural bliss' is that when I work on the Land-Rover I don't know what I am putting my hand in but like the old proverb: If it looks like s*** and it smells like s*** then it probably is!

My bags are packed just waiting for your call.

Bearhead, wet sheep poop has to be the worse thing i've come across, used it once before seeding a new lawn. It wasn't bad until it rained, neighbors were mad for weeks and they called the cops like what can he do? All that must add alot of acid paste mess (can't think of appropriate word) to the underside. I only run on the street hence clean underside. If your a Mexican no green card needed, you'll get the best medical care free while I have to pay. California's full of nuts you'll fit in just act like your some animal grunting alot with purple hair.

You've lived a sheltereld life Beemer. Try chicken waste. You only need about a micron thick covering and the smell lasts for eternity.

Next door to my favorite wrecking yard is a slaughterhouse, you can smell that place a mile away. Dad and I were going to a British motorcycle show on our Norton's, got behind a loaded cattle carrier then it seemed to rain. Very bad on polished aluminum show bikes and taste buds.

Thanks Beemer,
I will work on the Mexican accent. I can do the grunting but would have trouble with the Purple hair (Or any other colour!) would a Purple beard be OK man!
All dealers closed for the holiday so have just finished fitting a hand made Aluminium plate. Fits well, is very rigid and better than the original.
Now the exhaust is blowing, I guess I had better fix it but the sound is pure music.

I was under my 95 D1 today, yup those rear flap mounts are flimsy.
Were lucky as we can check engine and ABS faults, repair and clear without going to the stealers. OB1 sure is great. Gee joy I have a break in the right front ABS lead right at the sensor, seems that's where there is no outer cover and it flops around (good limey design). I had a resistor bypassing it for over a year, nows the time to correct it. Use a few tie wraps and secure the leads so it doesn't happen to yours. Best I could get was $255 all the way to $357 what a rip.
Paid $25 USD for a complete steering box seal kit, stealers will get you a reman for $900. Hell it's a Bendix with the same flaws. "They not only just copy but copy stupid but then it's british" my Rover stealer service manager friend says all the time. It took me 1 1/2 hours to grease the D1, I added zerks to every tie rod and ball joint besides the driveline.
Ever have your rear windows not function when it's raining? My D1 cost 7/100K extended warranty over $17K and was transfered from the original owner. There is a outfit in Oz that rebuilds vacuum advance cans, i'm on number 3, dealer frieng gave me one free and it's leaking. This is a sneaky sol fail item, cost $155 thru stealers. Rebuild with better materials app $45 USD. Clean and lube the mechanical advance. Rubber U joints suck with a s-speed, have a brand net real cross joint and shaft to install.
Don't get me started. Down to one door that opens, damn GM latches, and what a bear to replace the broken spring. But we is different so we dirve a fine british motor car.

I forgot to mention I purchased a Borla cat back system all stainless looks great on sale in 2000, problems it drones around 2250 to 2500 rpm's right at highway speeds. It sounds like a 289 going thru the gears. Muffler sounds like it has a cup full of roofing gravel inside it rattles, been told that Borla's million mile coverage will replace free plus i'll add a stainless resonator. Custom radiator installed in 2001 with a drain valve on the bottom pipe, handy when replacing hoses.
