I had my 1998 disco serviced by a local landy repair place here at Hervey Bay Qld. Australia, the other day and was told to remove the plastic plugs in the top of the radiator and the thermostat housing and replace with some brass screw in plugs that a bloke makes over here at $15.00 each.
Apparently the plastic plugs are cast hollow and eventually they decay and break. Causing loss of coolant and problems.
Just thought I would menton it.
Regards all
George. :) :p

They do snap off, but are only a few pence ( to us they are) and are easy to get out if they break. I have used brass plugs, they are useful if you remove them regularly, otherwise they can take the threads out of the castings.

The other reason for replacing the plastic plugs with brass is the ease with which you can overtighten the plastic ones and strip threads. They then have the tendency to pop out, causing rapid overheating.

My friend bought a Disco and was asking me about it...I told him what to look out for...told him first thing to do was to get 2 brass plugs immediatley to avoid the obvious....1 week later `stat one broke, cooked engine and now he is still waiting on parts...I even told him where to go and buy them for 2 euros each....oh well...no one is as blind as those who can not see ...eh???....he has the big sorry head on....just would`nt listen...which also leads me to `why do people ask advice and then proceed not to take it???`....ever experience that one???....
