Hello one and all... Julian from Bedford here, they say its a "Landrover thing you wouldnt understand" oh but I think I do as I have now purchased my 2nd one. First was a Disco 1 which was nice but the after-sales market for them is poorly equipped and expensive BUT I now have a SWB Series 3 88" with the 2.25 Petrol engine... Drove her home from Bletchley with the biggest stupidest grin on my face, no ABS, no PAS, and I felt I was in the SAS.
I know this isn't the format to bombard ppl with questions but the insperation for the purchase was March's LRM which showed a Series 3 Rag top which I simply fell in love with and hopes to be my insperation. I have been as mechanically adept as to have fitted a Safari snorkel to the Disco 1 and I fitted a Sub-woofer so Im hardly Mr fix it but I will have a go.
So if I may could I ask the following: (if its not the correct protocol to ask here my apologies)
1) Im fairly sure you can graft Defender wings onto the series 3 could anyone advise as to the degree of difficulty?
2) I love the series 3 already and I have only owned her for 3 hours but... leaf sprung is going to kill me so parabolic springs are whispering to me but I will have to have them fitted as a single garage doesnt afford me any real work space. So could anyone recommend a cheap and cheerful Garage near or around Bedford?
3) Almost done... Can I fit Defender wheels to her? (and then big tyres lol)
4) Finally.... (God Im cheap) anyone know of a competitive place to get her re-sprayed?
Thanks for indulging me as I appreciate I really should have posted this in the appropiate place but Im keen as mustard to start.
Regards
Julian Mann

1: Yes, you can put Defender wings onto a Series 3 (note that you'll end up blocking off the heater intake unless you do some fabrication). Why would you want to do that though?
2: Leaf springs are not as harsh as many would believe if they are oiled properly and lubricated. It is very likely that you're experiancing seized springs. To get them working again, oil them fully and then take the vehicle over some fairly rough ground (such as a cobbled street) at a fair pace. You may hear several bangs occur, which could scare you for a moment. The bangs should be simply the leafs bringing loose from each other so that they can slide and bend freely again.
3: Defender wheels. Do you mean the steel rims? If so, yes you can. Infact, the Defender and Series steel rims are almost identical apart from the fact that one type is revitted together and the other is welded together. :)
4: You don't have to have it resprayed. Coach painting, if done properly, can be just as good if not better than the vehicle being resprayed.
Anyways, hi and welcome. :)

hi fella , welcom to the forum.
defender wiings on a series three?
do some searching for photos etc because any i have seen in the past have looked strange to say the least. you have a series three not a defender and if you change the wings all you end up with is a series with defender wings.
personally id leave the series three wings on there. much better and keeps the vehicles character intact.
i remember the series on lrm's march front page though , stunning vehicle.

Hello and welcome.....
Leaf springs, what you want is a nice smooth set of coils :D
(runs and hides in dark corner from series owners)

Hello all and thank you for the welcomes.... I have to be honest whilst I appreciate I pitched my questions in the wrong place I did not want to offend the Series purists in any way shape or form, but a slight hybrid of the two is what Im after I adore the pedigree of the Series 3 but I love the ruggedness and squarer shape of some aspects of the Defender plus things like raised air intakes etc I think look more natural on a Defender wing. Please let me assure no offence was meant to either Series or Defender fans, I was simply dipping my foot in to establish which camp I would get the most help from  Castle1

Its very hard to offend anyone on here when it comes to modding your truck, there are so many different mods been done to so many trucks, we loose track.......
Try the "How do i do this" section, that way anyone can answer....

I have a Series 11 with a Defender front end. I agree with you I like the ruggedness of the Series but love the shape of the Defender.
I have posted a picture of my friends Series with a Defender front. I will post one of mine as soon as I can get it out of the garage.
