ok, this may be a no brainer from the start.. one of the boys laptops had got so slow that i decided to format the hard drive.. once complete rather than using the previous win 98 installation i used xp brought for another pc in the house. xp loads ok and runs back to normal speed, however i need to activate it within 30 days to carry on. To activate i need the pc's product key (normally on the label on the side) sods law the laptop (old work pc) does not have the label. The question is there any way i can get the key from the pc, bearing in i have done a re-format, or do i just go back to win 98.?

The number you need is not a PC number, it is actually the XP serial number. Have alook on the PC the disc is for there should be a number on there somewhere.

Explore the disc. There should be a readme file with the product key in it

yes, both pc's are dell, xp that came with the pc is a dell version and does state only to be used to re-install to the supplied pc, hence using the product key, using the same key for the laptop comes up as invalid...

Thats because the license is for one computer only it is illegal to install the operating software on another PC unless you have a multiuser license. Manufactures get a discounted fee but it is locked to the hardware.

Now there is your problem. Being a Dell they have you tied up in knots.

"Thats because the license is for one computer only it is illegal to install the operating software on another PC unless you have a multiuser license"

er no, its a single user license, witch meens if you own 5 pc's and you are the only user of them (like me with my small render farm), then you may put the same copy of windows ## an all the pc's, with XP M$ will give you new serial numbers to activate each copy of XP :D

but you are corect if some one else owns the PC or is a other user ;)
