View Full Version : URGENT - Land Rover recall on diesel engines ? info anyone ?

I'm being told by a seller that LR recalled his car after 12 months and changed the engine under warranty, apparently lots were recalled. Can anyone back this up ? I can't find anything on the web about it anywhere ...
Be nice to know if it's likely to be true and not him pulling a fast one :)
Cheers

I have not heard of an engine change recall, though I have heard of an engine loom recall, where they replace the loom, some wires were cut a little bit to short and could come loose I understand. Maybe that is what had been replaced for this guy, not the engine....
Other recalls are the handbrake, and seat back mechanism on the 3 door's. Possible failure of rear suspension locating links is another.
If you are looking for recall notices, it is worth visiting www.theaa.com/allaboutcars/recalls
I would be surprised if any manufacturer would have a mass recall to replace whole engines..... maybe a componet or two.
Hope it helps.....

Landrover UK said they will lookup any warranty/service work done on it if I call them back with a VIN, I'm getting that later. When I called the seller for this he said he's the 2nd keeper, and bought at 50k so it was done before he owned it. Has some paperwork so I'll check with LR then examine the paperwork.
Here's one recall page I found -
http://www.theautochannel.com/news/recalls/news.html?NEWS
.. and again ..
http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/?news/ae_news_story.php?id=18687
Couple of faults on top of the engine loom one you heard about, but nothing major. Possible this particular car had a fault and was replaced, LR will tell me if that's the case though.
BTW is there just the two of us here Lighting90 ? ;-)

:)
You're not very far from me though .. St Ives, nr Huntingon. Working in Cambs now ..
Presumably that's your Discovery .. I know a bit about those :) what spec's yours ?
darrenptalbot
6th Jun 2003, 15:00
Not entirely sure on spec .... but it's a little unwell at the moment.
Having new front prop, tyres and swivel bearings done in local garage in Fulbourn.
I work down at Capital Park in Fulbourn, live in Newmarket. Where are you?

6th Jun 2003, 15:23
Ouch .. sorry to hear that :( Is she diesel, V8 or T series ?
I'm at Castle Park, top end of town near the council offices (Cambridge). Small world isn't it ..
So, are there any decent off-road tracks around here ? quick bit of mud plugging and a pint some lunchtime could be fun :yay:
darrenptalbot
6th Jun 2003, 15:34
It's a diesel - don't know about the tracks, but keep meaning to try the Wildtracks open day at Newmarket on their off road circuit.
Pint sounds good too :yay:

Glad to see more are showing up in the crowd
I had seen the two sites you mentioned.
another site, the offical government one is worth a visit.
http://www.via.gov.uk/apps/recalls/default.asp
For searching the web, I use www.google.co.uk , as this gives the option of seaching the UK only, rather than the .com site which searched the world:p
If I get down your way, I will give both of you a pm, and you can take me out for a bit of green laning. My parents live just south of Peterborough:p

Sounds good to me ..... best we find those lanes!
:yay:
Lighting90
7th Jun 2003, 09:29
well I will give you a little time... :p
Hope to be your way sometime soon, as I want to pick up my S1 from my parents, though, finding the time is the problem, I may end up combining it with my trip to Billing this year.

Well I'll be all set by about Wednesday ;-) bought a nice silver freelander on Saturday .. good condition and good price, can't wait to get it home now :yay:
I'll get the local maps out and have a look for likely looking lanes, must be loads around here as it's very 'rural' :buck:
cya !

Good news!
:yay:
What spec did you get?
I've got mine back from the garage too!
:p

It's a '98 XEDi, basically full kit (including A/C). Mileage is 104k but first engine was replaced at 21k under warranty for some reason.
Has running boards too, which I may remove .. depends if they come down below the floor too much, and how we get on with them. Doesn't need them as it's not as high as a Disco or other 'proper' LR ;-)
I've just attached a JPEG of it .. if that works ..

nice one
:yay:
Will have to find these green lanes now!
Lighting90
9th Jun 2003, 13:05
pretty smart I can say... look forward to seeing it in down a greenlane or two...
does the full kit include TV, and sandwich toastie maker like my defender... :buck:
Heat seats are next on the options list.... must have them before winter I am told...
s.stirley
9th Jun 2003, 13:24
I have some seat heaters I took from a 800 Sterling a while back .. could be a good upgrade I guess :) they were very nice in the Sterling, though apparently give you piles !
No sandwich toaster, sadly. Already have a TV for it (5" TFT off e-bay, plug my laptop into it to play movies or use the sat-nav). Depending on what the rear visibility is like I may fit reversing sensors or a tiny spy camera I have somewhere.
Boys and toys eh ? :buck:

It's got more extra's than my last company car!
:p
Lighting90
9th Jun 2003, 14:41
Well our tv is only black and white, though it can be used anywhere in europe.. :p
A lot of the extra toys are my wife's, she is the one that likes all the little toys, heated mugs might be another extra in the future... she spotted them in the towsure catalogue, just have to find out if they will fit into the cubby box front and for me to add another couple of power sockets... thank god for second batteries and split chargers...

Forgot - I have a fridge too ! 29 pounds from www.speeding.co.uk - made by Ring. Totally recommended ! best thing I ever put in for the long journeys ..
I can see I'll be adding sockets to the Freeloader once we pick it up too :buck:

I assume you mean the Ring Cool Box, have one of them to, use to sit between the front seats, and were glad of it when we travled to Romania, meant we could have cold drinks and unmelted chocolate, when the heat outside was in the 35 to 40C range. At the moment I am trying to find a new location in the backand still make it accessible from the front, as we now have a Land Rover cubby box between the front seats, which is wider and better for everyday use.
Basically the defender can be kitted up for short or long distance jounery's with all mod cons. Water, cooker, cool box, TV, radio, food supply. :p Still have to get a toilet yet though.... :buck:
Eventually we will have it set up for camping etc, as a roof tent is also on the adenda one day, once the pennies have been saved. Already found the one we want which can include access to the inside of the vehicle without going outside, providing you use a tin opener to create a hole in your roof first of course.
:goofylook
I'm mad, I know...

9th Jun 2003, 17:15
Ah .. since I have a young family we have a large aluminium parachute to drag behind us for that eventuality :) (caravan)
:band:
Yes, Ring cool box BTW .. very good isn't it :)
Lighting90
9th Jun 2003, 17:42
Yes it was worth every penny, though I am also tempted by my local Tesco at the moment as they have a 35 litre electric powered cool box for £29.00 on those once it's gone it's gone offers...
I think the Freelander has extra sockets in the boot and rear passenger area does it not?
Or was i just hoping... I am trying to find as many reasons as possible to convince the wife we should change the Rover for a freelander.... She has put her foot down with regard to changing to a Disco... so the Freelander is my last attempt to become a complete Land Rover household.

Hello guys. Can I say that is a very smart Freelander,I really like the look of it plus all the toys of course.
What sort of caravan are you going to tow with it?I tow with a disco.:yay:
s.stirley
10th Jun 2003, 08:35
We have a '94 Swift Challenger 490SE. Been towing with a Rover 827, but both wanted a change. Nothing else in this sort of class/size was even vaguely useful as a towcar for something that big (1.3 tonnes) so it was a Freelander or nothing !
Father-in-law has a 94 Disco TDi for towing, very capable indeed. That early diesel is a bit 'agricultural' for me though, if you know what I mean. No offence !
L90 - most have a socket and rear ashtray I think, yes. A couple in the boot is common also, to be honest I didn't check as I knew I could add them easy enough :buck:
What Rover's your missus got ? I've got loads of manual CDs etc which may be useful if you do keep it longer. Have one of the Land Rover ones too, not sure if Discovery is on it though ..
Cheers, Simon.

It's a Rover 200, the same shape as the current 25, and I also now think I will have to change the front dampers very soon, though can't complain, as it has done just short of 100,000 miles, all but the first six miles under our ownership, so it has had a hard life. :p
It has also been used for off road too, before we got our own Landie...
s.stirley
10th Jun 2003, 13:21
216 ? good old Honda engine (up to about 95/96 anyway) last forever just about .. if it's a newer K series then I should congratulate you in getting to 100k ! :yay:
Lighting90
10th Jun 2003, 22:36
8 Valve 214i, though bad news, clutch started to slip on the way home. Oh well, will have to use the Landie now...
s.stirley
11th Jun 2003, 07:31
Did a replacement engine on one of those for someone once .. you can get it out with the gearbox in situ believe it or not ! clutch should be a much easier job though, IIRC only about 4 bolts hold engine+box together. Drop the n/s hub and just pull the box off ..
Lighting90
11th Jun 2003, 09:19
Well had a quote from my local garage, £100 labour, £60 for the clutch kit plus the VAT, giving a total of £200. Though he did say tha was maximum cost, as he did not have a price for a clutch, and was guessing on the high side. He said it might be £40 to £50 in truth. But he does not like to quote cheap to ge the job and then give the customer a nasty suprise, prefers to give them a nice one, like it is cheaper. :p So, goes in on Friday, so I have today and tomorrow to get on the street with my begging cap to pay for it... :p
I will tell them what you said about how easy it is to replace... maybe even get the labour cost down... :buck:
s.stirley
11th Jun 2003, 09:48
That's cheap ! I wouldn't do it for that even ! :snarl:

If I had the facilities to put the car up, I would do it myself, though my training is from a farming background. Large hammers come into it a lot!!!

Meant to ask, how is life going so far with the Freelander?

Collecting it tonight :) expect a new thread when I get home with it :yay:

Great, look forward to seeing your new thread, asking how to fit all the extras you have bought.:p

Hi, Lighting90 - where in Scotland are you?
I'm near to Stirling.
I'm an ex Freelander owner now. Have an Epsom Green 90 Tdi 300 for playing in the mud and on the hills and another rather more expensive and comfortable Land Rover for going long distances.

East side, edinburgh area... oh if only I could have the rather more expensive landie... :p
But ine step at a time, just got to get the wife to change to a freelander, at least she is agreeing to a test drive, sometime in the future... :p
The 90 is a hack vechicle, and long distance driver, and the S1 is stuck at my parents at the moment... :(
