Fir years I have used Norton Internet Security.. bone fide copy from PC world.... but now I am hacked off with it...
no matter what you do it insists on wanting to scan out going email, despite me turning the feature off !!!
I want to scan my incomming mail and have the usual antivirus protection but not the slowness of norton 2006...
can anyone advise what my options are ?
I have heard about online free anti virus products are they any good?

You can set it to automatically schedule the updates whenever you like :)

if you have windows XP try using the built in firewall it is suprisingly good. other than that i doktn really know all software firewalls have there plus and neg side none are truelly great and some like nortons truelly stink.

theres adware which is a free firewall from download.com or download.co.uk (says it is a free trial but carries on for as long as we have had it, you have to manually update though)can't remember which or defender from microsoft download site.
also try spybot from download.
I used to use AVG, until i had probs and tried another ant virus.... it picked up x2 virus' that AVG missed.
Firewall.....got to be "zone alarm free"
My recommendation is run AVG, but in a month or so try "Personal anti virus" from www.download.com (http://www.download.com) you'll find all anti virus have their faults, best get a strong firewall instead.
Also as mentioned "spybot" & "crapcleaner" both help keep your pc running smoothly. Download them from www.filehippo.com

try avast, i use it at home, its free updates itself, and has been awarded best home av product by a few magazines.
you get 60 days grace, then have to enter a code, which you just register free for.
oh and it has cleaned stuff that both norton and mcafee missed, and scans email as well.
zone alarm is good, but if you have the xp firewall from sp2 then thats fine as well, the one pre sp2 was about as secure as wet cardboard.

I use zone alarm for the fire wall recommended by my tame geek and as for the anti virus I use avast and it is so far brilliant.

If you are using a windows based PC there is only one anti-virus/firewall software to use and that's F-Secure.
I know people moan because it's a little slower than the rest but it does have 4 scan engins as opposed to 2 maybe 3 that most use.
Most banks are now insisting their online customers switch to it if their pc has been compromised before they will restore the service and barclays is now rolling it out to all it's customers free for the first year.

Avast is by far the best - free, updates and transparent

Do you have a link to "F-Secure" ? I'd like to give it a try.

Well.....got it installed and running. (F-secure2006).
Found my computer was inoperable for approx 45mins, due to all the virus news downloads that it through at my computer. But after they'd finished downloading everything seems fine.
I'll keep it running for a week, download another anti virus and check if its missed anything.....if not i'll be purchasing F-secure immediately.
Thanks for your advice.
F-secure....... From 1st connection to internet, it takes an astonishing 3mins at 2.3mb speed for my homepage to load.....another 2.5mins before i can check my emails, whats going on???
Something is still whizzing away busily in the background as i'm writing this post.
I'll be removing F-secure if this carries on.
Ahhh its just stopped......thats a total of 10.5mins where my pc is slower than a flamingo cemented in the ground.
Saying that......I suppose its best to be "slow" than "insecure".

1st Connection will be slow as F-Secure will be setting rules for evey bit of software that makes calls to the net i.e all of microsoft.
Plus it will probably be doing a signature file update and install and a full system sweep.
It will get quicker

F secure sounds as slow if not slower than my norton 2006, the very reason I got rid of it was its slowness !!!!
I've been using AVG and am very happy with it so far, no complaints and the more I have asked people about it the more I find people who use AVG free and most of them are either web designers or other I.T. types....
So I have nothing but praise for the free AVG.
Of those who have been using it for a while (3 years) all have reported no virus problems in the time they have used it, I'm sure that there people who will know people who have had virus with it but heck... I got a virus with Norton once.....
Anyway, AVG is a damned good balance of speed and protection.

I had Norton and loads of trouble, a rather nasty pair of virus's included.
The final straw was when I paid my subscription and didn't get anything in return. Norton were less than useful so I lost my £ss and went with AVG...Never had a problem, or a charge:D since and that is about 2.5 years ago now.

I also got fed up with Norton, started having problems with the Live Update, and going through their troubleshooting procedures just sends you round and round in circles and getting nowehere. To think I was actually paying for that junk! Now gone with AGV free, so much easier all round.

Strange,
I've never had any trouble with F-Secure or Norton.
At home I run F-Secure AV and firewall on my server along with a Firewall on my router.
Then my 2 pc's (1 XP and 1 2000) run F-Secure AV and Firewall and my 3 Mac's run Norton AV and Firewall.

I always found Norton made such a fuss about everything, when you are on dial-up at around 33k you really notice when it is making a fuss ... :(

Yep true, on dial-up Norton and F-Secure would be a pain in the butt as they do a continious (well OK every 5-10 minute) server query for updated signature files
Hmmm.......think ive discovered the problem. F-secure recommend min 256mb RAM.....whereas i'm only running 128mb.
In the length of time ive had it installed & been on the net.......it's detected x1 intrusion........zone alarm would have detected x3 (min) within the 1st minute of connecting to the net:eek: . . Why is this?
Is it because zone alarm registers attempts from the same source repeatedly or is f-secure letting non-serious threats through its defences.

None serious threats are treated as just that.
They are dealt with in the background. You can change the settings to report all but you really don't want that as the log file size will get silly
Thanks.
It does seem much quicker today. I'm goona up the ram size to 512mb at the weekend.
Thanks button monkey for your help/advice.
Cheers.

the main problem I had with Norton 2006 was its insistance to scan out going mail, I often send files 6mb in size and it took longer to scan than to send, and if you turn off out going scan on email it sits in the corner saying there is a problem and still scans everything... SLOWLY ! it seems not to like JPEG files.....
2005 was was fine its 2006 I have a gripe with !
