According to the DVLA, all that you need to keep a vehicle's identity is the original *or brand new replacement* chassis, plus at least two major components from the original vehicle. So, since my Lightweight is needing a new chassis anyway, it started me thinking...

If anyone has a V5 plus axles and steering box and/or gearbox, all from the same tax-exempt Lightweight, I would be rather interested in buying them. Anyone? I'm in Edinburgh.

I'd be careful Graham cos according to my local landy bod C&E are looking closely at retrieving road tax from people with tax exempt Landys who have fitted too many non original parts, though its clear a new chassis would be allowed .

Don't worry, I want to do this *legally*, that's why I want the two original components. I've checked the DVLA website, and that way it's perfectly legit.

Graham,

Surely by the rules you outline, it doesn't have to be a V5 from a Lightweight. Any 88" would suffice.

Good question, Steve, and I don't know the answer. I have a feeling that the replacement chassis must be original spec, in which case to use a Lightweight chassis, I need a Lightweight V5. It may be that I could get away with a normal 88's V5, but unless someone can convince me that it's not dodgy, I'm not keen to risk it.

Here's how I see it.

V5 and axles from any 88" will mean it's Tax free. This then gets a brand new direct replacement chassis.

Rest can be "any other" replacement parts... for example: set of Lightweight panels, seats, etc..

...oh by the way officer I specified a bolt in cross member for ease of maintenance in the future.

Panic over, I've had a garage look over the chassis, and it looks like it's repairable. So, no need for a new chassis (yet), and thus no opportunity to gain a tax exempt identity.
