Hi guys,

I've just blown 5th gear on my 02reg td5 disco!!!!

Its been slightly noisey for a little while but I thought I'd 'let it devope' - and it certainly has!
Its gone from a slight rumble to bang bang bang - sounds like a bearing has collapsed and the shaft is rattling around in whatever is left. Is this a common fault on these as its only done 120k miles? - my last disco(300tdi) had done 290k miles with no gearbox problems at all.

All the other gears seem ok so I limped home in fourth.

Obviously I'm now looking for a low mileage replacement gearbox if anyone has one or knows where I might get one at a reasonable price.
Also, does anyone know anywhere that would fit a gearbox for a reasonable fee in the south yorkshire / Nottinghamshire area? I'm gonna get a quote from Stratstone Landrover dealers tomorrow but just the thought of paying main stealer prices is giving me wallet cramps!!!

Any help / advise would be greatly appreciated,

John

i think it was legs i spoke to. they sell exchange boxs, did also say iff i took it out they would repair whatever it needed for 100 quid labour plus what parts it needed, thought that was pretty fair. alan...

we did the 'box on my bros 300 tdi defender, it took us a couple of days with no specialist equipment, recon one from ashcroft transmissions was about the £400 mark if i remember rightly+ clutch+new output shaft/transfer box sleeve, would highly recomend them.

Thanks guys,

I've managed to get a low mileage gearbox/transfer box complete for 500pounds, which seems to be the going rate, so I'm going to get a local guy to swap it and fit a new clutch while its apart.
Gonna cost around 300pound to fit which is a bit painful on the pocket - I would do it myself but I just haven't got the time or the facilities at the moment.
At least when the new one has been fitted I can rebuild the old one then sell it to recoup some funds.

Thanks again.

the previous owner of my old 300 disco had 5th gear go, it cost him £1200 to have the local independant LR garage remove, strip, rebuild and refit his gearbox,i have not got the details because i have now sold it on, with all the paperwork, but if i remember, the parts were very pricey and you need specialist tools,
good luck.

Thanks for your comments guys,

I've just picked up my disco with gearbox swapped over - new box is a lot tighter (fnar, fnar) and she's much smoother, she slides in and out (gfaw, gfaw) like a dream and she's not a screamer!:D

Total cost was around 900 including new clutch(which it didn't actually need) and I now have a gearbox and transfer box to strip, rebuild and keep as spare or sell and lots of other spare bits which came with the new unit - ie handbrake cable, high/low cable +lever, gearbox mountings etc oh and a clutch of coarse.
:D
