View Full Version : Tyres
Hi all, know this is a boring question thats been asked before but i need to ask anyway. What size tyres do you recommend for a 96 disco? its got standard suspension and the usual five spoke 7j x 16 alloys. At the moment its got 205/80's on it but they look a little weedy i believe 235/70's are the standard fit. Could i go a bit wider, say 255/65 without any modifications?
Most of my driving is on road and a fair bit of motorway but i would like to venture off road occasionally. Any advice on tyre type AT, MT, road, even remoulds woul be much appreciated.
Thanks.

205/80 or 225/75 or 235/70 are all about the same size in diameter. These are the correct sizes for a Disco 1. They differ in width by 3cm.
You can fit 245/75 (which I have) if you have a 2" lift.
Cheers Si guru, guess i'll go for 235/70's. Any suggestions on brand/ tread pattern? Dont want to spend a fortune, but then again i dont want to end up kicking myself for the sake of a few quid. Thanks.

My advice would be that unless you intend to drive in wet mud on a regular basis... fit road tyres. There will be cheaper and last longer, plus will add to the ecomony.

I have BFG All Terrains and am very pleased with them, they grip extremely well on both wet and dry tarmac and are very capable off-road. They are said to wear extremely well too, I have heard people getting 50K+ from a set and even 80K miles. A bit diferent to my Merc that eats rear tyres every 15K!!
I have a 2" lift and have 245/75 R16's, they rubbed a bit on the front radius arms and I have had to cut some of the rear bodywork, I think they call it a 'camel cut'.
These tyres do 'hum' a bit at speeds, if you are doing mostly roadwork go for a road biased tyre.
