View Full Version : discovery series 2 td5 engine temp gauge
Hi all, i'm new to the site as i've just got a 2001 series 2 discovery to maintain for a friend. I have come across a fault with the temp gauge in the dash, when the engine coolant is cold from being left overnight and switch the ignition on the gauge goes straight upto the half way mark.As you run the vehicle to its running temperature the gauge slowly creeps up to the red but the engine is only warm.I would be interested if anyone else has had this problem and how it was sorted, forgot to mention i have fitted a coolant sensor but did no difference.

sounds like a fault in the temperature sensor.
It's a new sensor fitted but when you disconnect the sensor the gauge stays the same at half. There is 5 volts at the sensor all the time is this right.

check if it also has a water temperature switch..... most vehicles these days have both temp senders and temp switches, one for the gauge and one for the ecu..... disconnect the battery for 30 mins reconnect and try again

the temp gauge gets the input from the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor. the output from the ECT sensor ranges 0-5V. when engine is cold, the voltage output is high side, ie maybe 5V. when hot, the output will be the other end, ie. towards 0V. if sensor is fine, then you may have to look into the gauge.

Thanks very much for the imformation,i spoke to an electrician that works with landrover here in inverness and he says that it could be the gauge at fault.I have ordered a s/hand instrument cluster from a breaker to see if it will cure the problem.
