2nd gear problem

hi. ive been experiencing a few problems trying to get second gear to engage if i dont really pull it in to second it grinds, ive been told that it may just be the second gear syncro going. what ever that means??. and that the syncro is just a plate that helps the gear engage and that its a common fault for them to go. but what im concerned about is im supposed to be making a 200 mile trip in a few weeks, and wondered if the gear box would be ok to take the trip or is the gear box likely to pack up in the near future??. the box goes through all the other gears really well and smooth its just second that needs tlc. thanks for reading this and hopefully replying. chris:rolleyes:

Mine is the opposite, if your hurry 1st to 2nd it will grind, if you do it smooth, slowly and gently (ooer!) it slips in nicely (gaffaw!).

I have been told this is a common problem, not too much to worry about other than I live at the bottom of a hill and in the morning when the Disco is cold you have to get quite a speed up in 1st before going to second otherwise it will kill it, even more fun with a laden trailer!
