well actually, both of em :( :(
my laptop when i try to boot it says 'no boot disk' - hard drive dead i assume?
and my pc when i switch it on (main switch on PSU) it comes on for about 1-2 secs (lights, fans everything) then goes straight off and has to be switched off and on again on the psu switch, and it just keeps doing that
whats up with it???
cheers

James, of all people I least expected you to be asking these questions. :D
I'll pop onto MSN to give you instructions on what to try on at least your laptop. Okay?

With the laptop - find yourselfa bootdisk (either floppy or cd) that has FDISK on it. It maybe that a virus has corrupted the masterboot sector - hence the laptop is unable to boot from disk - from the boot disk - type FDISK /MBR (this will recreate the masterboot record). It may help it may not.
The pc - thats a cracker. What have you added recently to the pc - hardware wisee. Disconnect it and try powerr up again.

The FDISK /MBR, does not zap the enitre drive it only rebuilds the master boot record.

Sounds like hdd on laptop is dead or on its way BUT....
before you try and attack the laptop's harddrive with software recovery, first remove and re-seat it then try to boot again. Sometimes, depending on situation they can come away from the interface.

PC - right i pulled it apart earlier...tried a new PSU to no avail.
then i disconnected all the drives etc. if i switch it on with just the m/board connected it boots fine until it asks for a boot disk (obviously it wont find it!), if i connect ANY drive then try booting it runs for the second or two then goes off....same with the replacement PSU as well....
Anyone got any thoughts?

Possible that the disk controllers are gubbed. do you have any spare hd's or floppy disks - try connecting them - see what happens
