hmmm...
To be honest anything you see for that kind of money is not going to be roadworthy, or will cost twice that to get into a useable state.
For that money I'd say your looking at Series III 109 Diesel, even then you're going to have to be determined shopper to get something decent.
What are you going to use it for? (My line of thinking is - "Do you actually need a Land Rover, or just something big and cheap?")
Steve.

I was thinking about some other, not so desireable 4x4 like a four trak or pajero or something but the amount of times i get myself stuck in muddy field or have to tow other people out tells me i need something bombproof and defender somes it up. I need something big because I use the car to sleep in, I go off climbing rocks and doing other stupid things at weekends! I would also with this in mind like to carry out extensive modifications, and i dont know anything more amenable to this than a defender!?
Thanks a lot for your advice by the way, much appreciated...

Mike,
A Series II 109 still fits your criteria then(?). You still have all the possibilities to modify it. The advantage of a 109 is generally they are cheaper that 88 inch models. This is only because they are not quite as capable in *extreme* off road situations.
I can't help stressing that at the sort of money your talking about that condition of the vehicle is going to be critical in your purchase. You're going to be much better off with a nice 109 than a really crabby 110.
Experience (with my friends) has shown that anything that intially seemed a bargain purchase (Land Rover-wise) turned out to be a financial liability.
...of course, the other advantage of a 109 is you could look out for a pre-1972 tax free vehicle.

Although I'd question whether he has any friends really (only joking..... he's my bro!!!), he is abo****let correct. Any "Defender" or 110 less than £2k will be a shed! I know I've spent the last few months trying to buy a Defender.
A 109 would be a much better buy for the sort of money you are talking about. You can get an ex-MOD for less than that if you are prepared to fix it (they tend to be "well used"!).
Unfortunately less money means more rust..... and older means more rust...... and even "genuine reason for sale" means "I've found more rust!"..... but thats the fun of being a Land Rover owner!!!
Good luck with the search...... if oyu do get a Defender 110 Diesel for less than £1k... and its decent... sell it for big profit...quick!!
