thats what I said but apparently some of the things he wants to back up are more than 3 gb (don't know what) I wonder if he is refering to the files rather than documents. he puts a lot of his old cinefilms on to computer

have you met my Dad he wouldn't do that. He has been spotted with white socks and leather sandals.
timbott I totally agree I would back up on to cd's but a mate of his has told him a hard drive is the way forward so there will be no telling him.
As he only wants a 16gb i thought I might get one cheapish as most people seem to be getting 200gb external hard drives etc

Sounds like he has been advised to backup his 'entire' drive. That can be done with a variety of different software thats out there - like Drive Image or Ghost .... this creats an image file (on dvd or another harddrive) that is an exact replica of your pc at the pointof running. Should something crash or the C drive becomes damaged, runningthe Drive image software will allow the 'image' file to be restored on the C drive. THIS WILL REPLACE ANYTHING THAT IS THERE - ALL NEWER FILES/DOCUMENTS CREATED SINCE THE IMAGE WAS CUT WILL BE LOST.
How I get around is -
C drive is for programs and operating system
D drive is for data and documents.
Using Drive image - cut an image file of the entire C drive.
Make a backup of the data/documents to CD or DVD.
If C drive crashes - it alone can then be restored leaving all users data & documents in tact.
