Hi all

2003 Disco TD5 auto. On start-up and when changing gear selector have started getting green flashing S & M on dash. Does clear after one or two re-starts. Hasn't happened when actually driving after moving off. I know this is a warning related to the electronics in the gear box but am I right in recalling that this is a common fault with the censor. Going into LR next Thursday. They say it is okay to drive. Any comments or advice welcome. Thanks

I had this problem with my 52 plate V8 Auto. Checked the transfer gearbox which was fine, and found it was the battery coming to the end of its life. Changed battery, the problem went away!

I had something very similar on my 2000 series II Td5 auto, which eventually lead to the gearbox going into 'safe mode' - ie; third gear only. At first it was intermittent, then got more and more difficult to shift. After what turned out to be a fairly torrid session with toolbook (I was assured) the guy traced it to an earthing fault on the various switches associated with the gearbox.

The switches broke and made okay, but since the earth return was going high resistance, the gearbox ECU couldn't make up its mind what the status actually was. It just threw up its hands and yelled 'uncle!' The actual fix took very little time - the earth point is on top of the gearbox and under the console - but the diagnosis took nearly a day.

Roger.
