View Full Version : Ticking, clicking and popping noise...

I've got the aforementioned noises coming from my rear-offside, which seems to be in time with the speed of the car. No rumbling or funny behaviour from the car, just the noise. My suspicion is that a wheel-bearing is going, but any other thoughts would be gratefull received.
If it is the bearing, how straight-forwards is the repair? I've looked through the Haynes manual, and also a recent article in LRO, and it seems perfectly do-able?

Check the tyre for foreign objects.

Thanks: yes, I had already checked the tyre for stones etc.. caught, but no joy, I'm afraid (I really hoped this would be the problem, so much easier to sort out!). Next idea?

Jack up the rear wheels up (safely!) and spin the wheel. If you proceed to change the bearings then do both sides at once. Looking at the article it doesn't seem that different from a Land Rover Series 3, which I did with minimal previous experence. I put the bearing races in the freezer to make fitting easier.
Another possibility is that one of the propshaft CV joints is on the way out. I don't know the procedure to check these on a Discovery.
You could record the clicking sound whilst driving at a fixed speed. Then count the clicks in a fixed time (e.g. a minute) and apply some maths.

As JP says, but check the wheel nuts are tight.

Cheers fella's, all the comments much appreciated. I've got a loose 'cover' on one of the wheel nuts, but I'm sure that alone cannot be making all the noise.
