hi thanks for reading this and hopefully replying?. my rear diff is leaking oil on my 1994 300tdi disco at the front where the propshaft goes in to the diff. its making a slight whining noise when in motion, i bought a diff pinion seal but when i took the propshaft off i couldnt for the life of me figure out how to remove the pinion thingy, but noticed that there is quite a bit of play in the pinion that goes into the diff that ataches to the prop shaft and a friend said that the bearings gone, could any one tell me what parts im likely to need and if its possible to fix this problem myself and what tools etc would be much, much appreciated. thanks chris:eek:

Chris,
The pinion bearing play may be adjusted out without the need for new bearings, it just depends on how much play your getting. If your going to strip an rebuild the diff you will probably need dial guages and other fairly specialist tools. If your not that confident in this area I'd recommend going to a specialist such as Ashcroft Transmissions or Crown Differentials for peace of mind.

depending on how quickly you need it fixing and your mechanical skills(no offence meant, just noting that you didn't know how to fit the seal), the quickest option would be to fit a second hand diff from a breakers yard, 100 - 150pounds.
You will then have your old diff which you can rebuild and sell at your leisure. Or do what I seem to end up doing and leave it on the garage floor so I can trip over it regularly! lol

Hi Chris
I finaly see a fellow Disco owner of the same heritage in Stoke - where abouts r u?
If you get stuck mate maybe both of us could have a go at not knowing what we are doing? Saying that I have plenty of tools and a haynes manual and a good mate that is a disco guru.

Hi Chris
Sounds like a monster you are making there?
Id like to do similiar to mine as ive had my 300tdi about a month , not done any off roading in her yet but I had a 90 for three years before her and tricked it up quite well and did loads of off roading, also had a nice series three before that as well.Decided to go "posh" this time -mainly cus we do loads of camping and its better for the kids and safer.
Id like to take a look at your lifted disco sometime mate to see how it looks , did you get the stuff local and do it yourself?
Keep up the good work.

hi gazza
we fitted the lift kit i went to paddocks to get the kit, but i had my wheels and tyres from up bronco 4x4 in leek, its made a lot of difference the rides a lot more comfortable all my old shockers were shafted and leaking, so i thought instead of replacing them with standards id fit off road ones. i did want a 90 myself but my other half didnt want me have one, plus i think my 2 kids are more happy traveling in the disco?. plus my money wouldnt of really streched too far on a 90, where discos have been getting cheaper aint they.
any way im going go pick me little lad up from me grandads in mow cop then im going get under disco try do this seal.
but yeh you,d be more than welcome have a look at disco, when ever you want!. are you in any landy club, or are there any locally do you know?. chris.:)

I agree about the cost you get a hell of a lot for your money with a disco. Im gonna do a lift kit probably in Oct sometime and it would be nice to see how yours looks compared to my stock landy?
I'm afraid I wouldn't be going to Bronco though - had two sets of tyres from them and they were rubbish - had one blow out whilst the kids were in the 90 and they weren't interested when I complained.
I aint in any disco or landy clubs but there are a few of us that go green landing sometimes as I have done most of the tracks round the Peak District before - Im off camping in Devon after next week with the kids but when we get back you are more than welcome to come out one Sunday with us - this forum also gets a decent group outing as well.
Good luck with the seal, if you get stuck or need any parts picking up just let me know?

Small world indeed, only been Devon twice before and we are the same - never taken the Disco too far and I am hoping a praying nothing goes wrong - if she behaves we can take loads for our camping trip as Im borrowing a trailer and I have a 4 bike rack by simbar on the back as well.
I always make green laning a family day out - nothing too serious. Plan a nice route round the Peak District and have a picnic at some point, maybe a pint at the Cat n Fiddle? When we get back I will mail you and we will take a four Disco convoy out for the day and have a laugh.
I have to do some winter ready work but it can wait till September - need to replace the rear floor pan as it is a trifle Holy!!!!!
Good luck

I had the front oil seal on my rear diff go on my hybrid I took the prop off and there was a fair bit of play, to undo the nut we wedged a socket and breaker bar on the trailing arm and drove forward. (I was in a field with limited tools) put in a new oil seal and retightened the castle nut, with the new oil seal virtually all the play has gone. Don't know if this will last, but have trialled since and it still seems OK
