I think the cable is fraying. But it only occurs after work when we come out at 2am and the car is very cold. As I get up to speed I can hear a whistle sound and the rev counter stops at 0. Then after a few minutes the whistling stops and the counter flicks back to its 2000rpm or whatever I'm sitting at with no further problem with that trip.
If I dont care much about the revs is this an urgent fix or will it fray ing cause other damage elsewhere?

Had this prob on my disco v8, Rev counter is driven by the alternator. Check the fan belt and the alternator

IIRC Michelle drives a V8, 'cos she lives in Australia, and diesel hasn't been invented down there yet :D .

Oh ok. Well, can't comment on the V8 really but my alternator is playing up at the moment (hopefully the replacement is coming tomorrow) and of course it's intermittently causing the rev counter to drop out when the fault appears.

not sure on the v8 meself but the deisels have the pick up feed from the back of the alternator which can corrode and get a bad conection, a good clean up usually cures. alan.....

oh dear...alternator.... jus tmy luck.
Woudlnt I be seeing other symptoms though? ie lights brightening and dulling as I rev and release?

phew...lights are fully stable...I'll run with the cheap option (belt tension). Are 'fan belt' and 'drive belt' one and the same with this beast? (v8 petrol/lpg). Drive belt was replaced recently by a bunch of morons, so quite possibly needs tensioning.

Make sure they have put it on the right way.
