The alarm on my 1998 300tdi disco is playing up.

Recently it has got harder to set the alarm with the fob. I have replaced the battery in the fob & things still got worse, so i have taken to using the key to lock it up. When unlocking the vehicle & then trying to start it the imobiliser is still preventing the starter operating. Somtimes it will start straight away & other times youi have to wait up to 20mins. Any ideas as this is starting to get embarasing:o :o :o

Are you certain that the starting problem isn't something entirely different? How do you eventually get it to start, is it by continuously locking/unlocking the vehicle or is it just a case of waiting 20 mins and trying again? And, what are the symptoms when it doesn't start... does she try to turn over?

I've recently had an issue with my Discovery where sometimes you'd turn the key and she'd be dead. No starter motor, no nothing. I thought I had an immobiliser problem but then it seemed that if I tapped the starter motor with a hammer she'd run. That infact turned out to be a red herring because I replaced the starter motor at a cost of £150 and the problem was still there
Eventually I suspected the starter motor relay, which provides power to the solenoid so I put my own starter button in which I wired directly to the starter motor solenoid itself. Now, whenever that problem re-occurs, if I press my dedicated starter button she'll run. That pretty much confirms my suspicions of it being the relay, but I've done an ace job on the starter button and it looks cool so I'm going to leave it as it is :)

Hope you get to the bottom of your problems soon

Brian

I have normal ignition just the starter motor dead.

Whilst like this the alarm warning light on the dash is lit & there is another warning light on the dash flashing (warning light shape of vehicle with a key symbol in the middle) . As soon as these lights go out starting is as normal.

My 300tdi disco did this once when the battery in the alarm remote fob was flat - replaced the battery and everything worked again.
As you've already tried that, have you checked the wiring / circuit board inside the fob for any signs of damage? or bad connections?
I recently had a problem with a remote working / not working intermittantly which turned out to be the button inside the fob had become detatched.

Have you tried using the other alarm remote just to confirm that is the fob that is at fault (assuming you still have both of them)

Do you have the alarm remote fob on the same keyring as the ignition key? - I think the fob needs to be close to the ignition switch for the imobiliser to be fully deactivated.

As a short term cure to deactivate the immobiliser, if you look in your handbook it should give you a code which allows you to open the drivers door with the correct number of turns of the key, clockwise and anti, to disable the immobiliser until it is locked with the remote again.

You could also do a search on here for 'immobiliser spider' and see if it could be this.

Problem now found. It is a broken connection in the fob where the battery fits in. (apparently a common problem according to the AA man). Anyone know where i can get a replacement fob?
