Anyone got first hand knowledge of replacing the LT230 with a BW Viscous TF box, please.
Is the handbrake cable the same or will the RR cable attach to the Disco brake lever?
Can the existing linkage remain or do I need the RR rod?
Is the speedo drive OK?
Thanks all.

As you've mentioned Borg, I wonder if I'll get in trouble for mentioning Voyager and Seven of Nine :D

I want to replace the LT230 on my 300 series Disco V8 with a BW box.
I believe that I have all the right parts now; from a Classic Softdash.
Transfer Box with the latest (direct cable) drum brake.
Chassis bracket for RHS (the LHS one's on the gearbox).
Actuator lever and bracket for the ZF Autobox.
Solid front propshaft for use with V8 with cats (the rear 'donut' prop part numbers look to be the same).
One-off knob.
Has nobody done this modification or even seen it?

I've honestly NEVER heard of anyone doing this. Indeed over here everyone with the BW wants to do the opposite- swap the BW out for the lt230! I imagine you could find some threads that tell how to do that and work backwards?

Just curious- why do you want to swap? Is it a case of just using what you have on hand to fix something that is broken?

Hi Mpi,
Thanks for the pointer.
Why would I want to? Having run a Range Rover Classic with the superb BW box for the past 4 years (and used it in anger!), I find the LT230 agricultural, horrible and too slow in operation. Waiting and watching for the diff-lock light to come on and go off is such a pain.
I think the marketing guys at LR were so cynical to keep on fitting the LT230 for nigh-on ten years just to distance the Disco from the Range Rover.
I do concede that the later LT230s are smoother and far quieter than the older ones but it still needs brute force and ignorance in equal measure to shift it.

Well most people, myself included want to do the opposite especially since when used off road the BW does not allow a real 1:1 lockup of the front to rear. I'm in the midst of sourcing a discovery LT230 to replace my BW in my '89 RRC. There are ample instructions for doing that swap so you would in fact have to find those and work backwards.

I can see where you might prefer the chain drive BW for on road usage, but the agrarian nature and brute strength aspects of the LT230 are what appeals to most people.

Pirate is an unfriendly place for the uninitiated but here is a post that might help some:

Three cheers for MPi.
I look forward to bucking the trend, swimming against the tide or other such contrived metaphors.
I may even get a few quid (er, Bucks) for the LT230: As far as they go it is a good one.

I'm sure you'll find someone who will be willing to swap!:D

I finally got around to doing the swap. I even changed to a later (300 Series) Disco in the meantime.
So I now have a broad smile and a 'full kit' that would suit someone with a RR Classic/Softdash, wanting to convert to LT230. Even the sticker off the console!! LoL.
