View Full Version : Images for all to see
I've just been trying to send some photographs to family members and some of their ISPs have bounced them back giving no reason why. I suspect it's because they were too big.
I've seen posts by members on these forums containing links to their photographs. Are these websites or special image hosting? More importantly, do you have to pay?
My ISP is Virgin and the package I have gives me so many Mb worth of space. My limited knowledge on this subject and understanding the IT jargon is that to use this space I'd have tompurchase a web name then I could build a site.
All I want to do is publish some photographs that family members can view and download if they wish.
Can anyone point me in the right direction please?
Cheers,
AJ

I use photobox for printing pictures, a good service, and you can make albums for people to see, can restrict who sees it too.

I agree with Big Jim. The service from Photobox is excellent. Each time you order form them you get more space to save photos

You could always download a free FTP client (http://www.coreftp.com/) & upload your photos to your own webspace for all to see :)

Sounds just the job Madoobri but having read the first page I'm totally lost with the following for which there is no explanation!
FTP LE, SFTP (SSH), SSL, TLS, IDN, FTP, EDUs
Is some in depth IT knowledge is required? :(
I will persevere and see if I can get my head round it.

Isn't photobucket a free site for photo hosting?

LOL ... FTP (File Transfer Protocol) in fact this (http://software.visicommedia.com/en/products/aceftpfreeware/) is the FTP client I use ... you need to get the webspace address from your ISP ... for instance www.*******.freeserve.co.uk the * bit is my username but Virgin may be different. Configure the software ... your left screen is your host (your pc) & the right hand screen is your webspace ... so all you do is locate files on your pc & transfer them to your webspace ... then let people know your address & presto hey ... they can see the photos or other files ;)
Targeted advertising? :D ;) Is that the closet door opening?
& presto hey ... they can see the photos or other files Just like that? Nothing is that easy for me. Whichever way I go with the images, I would like to experiment with a website. Watch this space.

Madoobri,
Ma heed is spinnining!
Reading the extract below, will Virgin support the FTP client you use?
AJ
Virgin.net do not offer a domain name registration or hosting service. These services tend to be offered by specialised businesses, who only provide hosting.
In order to have a domain name, you will need to ask a domain hosting company to register a domain name with either Nominet or Internic. The domain hosting company will then need to point your domain name as a CNAME for freespace.virgin.net.
You will then be able reach your site with the address http://www.yourname.co.uk/user.name.
Before even thinking about the idea of having a domain name, make sure you have evaluated your position. Is your chosen name really suitable? Are you going to hate it in six months and then you're stuck with it? After all, it's alot of money to spend on something you might eventually drop. Think of it as a real commitment. A domain name is for life, not just for Christmas.

Yes it will AJ ... I think you need to go to your `customer services area`, and go into `your account` to find your web address and details. Let me know when you have the details & d/load Ace FTP Pro (http://software.visicommedia.com/en/products/aceftpfreeware/) & I`ll help you get stuff onto your webspace ... remember this won`t be a `website` as such, just your webspace (pretty boring to look at) where you can store files etc & eventually your website when you get it done :) Hope this makes sense!

aye that is it if you want any advice re hosting or domains check out www.netcetera.co.uk or call them ask for paul nicholson and tell him chris ramsay told you to call he will be able to sort you out. I used to work there and paul is a sound bloke.
AJ,
If you get your webspace sorted out and want to display your pictures in a more professional manner I can recommend Picasa (http://picasa.google.co.uk/intl/en/#utm_source=en-all-more&utm_campaign=en-pic&utm_medium=et), a free download from Google.
Not only will it help you sort and track all the pictures on your hard drive but will automatically make a web page for you that you can upload to your webspace.
Even if you don't have a web space it is a great program for organising your photos.

www.photobox.co.uk (http://www.photobox.co.uk) will host your pictures for you. You can have private, public, invited or a pro gallery. I have just started organising my stuff for wedding photography on there and you can sell your pictures online for a price that you set
Many thanks for those recommendations (and opportunities to name drop ;) ).
