Hi simon/lighting
Thanks for your ideas. I really want to get to the bottom of this.
It seems to happen when turning either way but more so on left turns. And it only happens if I accelerate out of the corner. It doesn't seem to be the drive shaft. I thought it was as I could see where the drive shaft had been rubbing near the diff. I replaced the bushes on the diff.
Thanks for your help guys and keep the ideas coming!
cheers, mick.

okay, firstly, when you read the posts, you will see a couple of buttons at the bottom, one marked reply and the other new thread... use the reply one.. :p
That way we will get an e-mail of when you reply back... and can then answer you maybe a bit quicker...

It sounds a lot to me like something is been moved by the movement of the engine when accelerating, not been familiar with the underside set up of the freelander, maybe simon can give better advice.
On thought is the exhaust, does it come close to any of the propshafts, as I am sure when you accelerate, it might tilt one way and the propshafts could tilt the other way, and the two items make contact. Worth having a look, even see if you can feel any movement in the exhaust by reving the engine a little.

A guru once old me that 75% of all noises under a vehicle is caused by a loose fitting exhaust...

The exhaust / prop down the middle are pretty close, that could easily explain it. I crawled around all underneath mine last night and could find nothing suspect. Inspected all of the rear hub mounting brackets that are mentioned in the recalls, no damage there.

Then when I checked my e-mails someone at the freelanderclub list said there's an LRE article this month about a noise like this when changing gear. Apparently that's the rear diff front mounting which can split. I'm going to check that also.

HTH, Simon.

One of you two is going to find the problem.. :p

When I fitted a new exhaust to the 90, I forgot to tighten the top most joint, this allowed the exhaust to drop slightly while driving and caused a knocking noise, though in my case it was on the rear cross member, and it happened everytime I accelerated as that was enough to move it when the engine tilted...
